Planned Parenthood Gets $3 Million Boost to Fight Breast Cancer

One last one from Intern Claire before she heads back to school for her fall semester:

Earlier this year, the Susan G. Komen Charity, one of Planned Parenthood?s largest financial supporters, decided to cut off nearly all of its $700,000 annual grant money to the women?s health network used to fund breast cancer screenings. In the four days that followed, 77,000 supporters of Planned Parenthood reacted to the news by donating a whopping $3 million to the organization.

With the $3 million worth of donations, Planned Parenthood will be providing biopsies, ultrasounds, and basic screenings. One-third of the money is to pay for more diagnostic tests. Clinics will also offer educational resources for women under the age of 40, and an outreach program for Hispanic women.

There was a lot of controversy and anger over Komen?s decision to cut their donations to Planned Parenthood ? so much so, that supporters of Planned Parenthood forced the breast cancer charity to reverse the change! Komen insiders later said that they had been overwhelmed by anti-abortion activists and acted under pressure when they made the initial decision to cut funding. Since the incident though, the charity has been keeping close ties with Planned Parenthood chapters that they were already affiliated with and are expanding to ones in areas that they weren?t originally planning to. They are also forming relationships with well-known organizations such as LIVESTRONG.

I have a lot of respect for Komen trying to spread awareness of one of the leading causes of death for women (my Grandmother being a victim) to as many people as possible. In my opinion, Planned Parenthood, who have been faced with a lot of disrespect from Conservatives are doing an amazing thing as well. The more education and resources there are to treat breast cancer, the more lives will be saved.
