Chez Cayenne: The Bye and Bye (a copycat drink recipe)

The Bye and Bye is a cute little tavern in Portland, Oregon with a short menu of delicious vegan food. We ate there this summer when we were visiting family.

To go with my meatball sandwich, I ordered the house signature drink, the Bye and Bye.? The bartender filled a mason jar with ice, added a couple of shots of liquor, some juice, and a squirt of something from the soda gun. I loved it. The drink is fruity, but not cloyingly sweet. When I finished it, I decided that I wanted to make them at home.

When I got home, I couldn't find a recipe for a Bye and Bye, so I had to get creative. The menu said it contained peach infused bourbon and vodka. I don't have flavor-infused liquors, usually, and didn't want to buy any, so I used regular bourbon and vodka and some peach schnapps. Then I had to figure out the juice. I tasted cranberry juice and guessed that the soda was ginger ale.

I mixed it all up, and it tasted right, but the color wasn't pink enough. I tried adding some pomegranate molasses. Whoops, my drink was now brown. I thought about using some grenadine, but then I remembered that we used to make pink lemonade with grape juice when I was a kid, so I added some grape juice concentrate. Pinkness was achieved.

I've been drinking these on weekends ever since. This is a great drink anytime, but it's especially nice right now as the last heavy days of late summer ease into the crispness of fall.

Disclaimer: I only had one of these and I'm working from memory, so I might not have the juice ingredients exactly right (the liberties I took with the liquor was on purpose), and the color of mine is a little deeper than the original, as I recall. The flavor is spot on, I believe. But if you've had this drink and have any suggestions as to how I can make it closer to the original, leave me a comment!

A Pitcher of Bye and Byes

1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons vodka (3 ounces)

1/4 cup bourbon (2 ounces)

1/4 cup peach liqueur (2 ounces)

1 cup ginger ale

2 cups cranberry juice

2 tablespoons? purple grape juice concentrate (or 1/2 cup grape juice)

Mix all ingredients in a 1 quart pitcher. Pour over ice into 4 juice glasses or 2 large mason jars.

Makes 2 tavern-sized drinks or 4 regular ones.

Harman shows off its upcoming JBL docks and speakers, we go eyes-on

Harman showsoff its upcomming JBL docks and speakers, we go eyeson

Harman announced a fair amount of JBL-branded speakers back at IFA, but that wasn't all it had to announce before the year goes out. Today we met with in the company in NYC, where it was ready to show off even more of its upcoming wireless and dock speakers. In fact, don't tell Harmon that the 30-pin connector is on its way out, as its $199 OnBeat Venue (seen above and $139 OnBeat aWake are ready to pair up with your last-gen iOS devices. The Venue is rated for a peak output of 30-watts and features a stow-away dock a tweeter and woofer combo for both stereo channels, component outputs for use with TVs, an obligatory 3.5mm jack and Bluetooth if you'd prefer to go wireless. The aWake shrinks things down to about 13 watts, and features a digital clock so that you can use it on your bedside night stand -- despite its small size, it'll easily dock an iPad. Both systems also work with free JBL apps for iOS that'll enhance the experience. According to the company, it's also working on solutions for the Lightning connector, but wouldn't reveal any hard details.

Moving along to dedicated speakers, you might recall the SoundFly BT, which recently got outed during its trip to the FCC. The 20-watt Bluetooth-equipped unit is strictly intended to plug directly into wall outlets, having only a status light with no inputs or buttons. It'll set you back $149 when it hits shelves, and if you tack another another $50 you can get an AirPlay-equipped version instead. We gave the BT a quick listen and it sounded surprisingly big with a fair amount of bass extension -- impressive considering it's petite and it plug-friendly design. A Harmon rep even noted that the hotel we were in was interested in procuring some for its rooms. Sadly, the units aren't remotely water-resistant, even though our demo area was a bathroom.

Lastly, we're actually most intrigued by the $59 Harman / Kardon BTA 10 dongle. The nearly matchbook-sized box connects to any speaker via its 3.5mm jack, allowing you to stream over Bluetooth 4.0 on the fly. Power is supplied via a micro-USB cable, and a blue indicator light lets you know that it's powered up. Harmon's mainly created it to add Bluetooth functionality to its non-wireless speakers, but it can be used with any speaker of your choice. We're also told that it overs very high-quality, despite being Bluetooth, thanks to some in-house development dubbed as TrueStream. There's no exact word on when all of these units will hit shelves, but you can peek the galleries for better looks -- check the source link for full details.

Dunkin' Donuts Reveals Professions With Heaviest Coffee Drinkers

September 26, 2012 by Steven Rothberg

John Costello of Dunkin' DonutsNational Coffee Day is this coming Saturday and, according to a new survey commissioned jointly by?Dunkin? Donuts?and?CareerBuilder,?food preparation and service workers are the professions that need coffee the most, followed by scientists and sales representatives. The survey results also show that coffee plays a major role in helping professionals perk up at work, as 43 percent of those who drink coffee claim they are less productive without a cup of Joe.

For the third year in a row, Dunkin? Donuts and CareerBuilder partnered to determine the latest coffee consumption trends brewing in the U.S. workplace. The survey was conducted from August 13 to September 6, 2012 and included more than 4,100 workers nationwide.?According to the results, the professions with the highest proportions of workers stating they are less productive without coffee vary widely. Those who need coffee to get through the workday the most are:

  1. Food Preparation/Service Workers
  2. Scientists
  3. Sales Representatives
  4. Marketing/Public Relations Professionals
  5. Nurses (Nurse, Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant)
  6. Editors/Writers/Media Workers
  7. Business Executives
  8. Teachers/ Instructors (K-12)
  9. Engineering Technicians/Support
  10. IT Managers/Network Administrators

The survey also shows other ways that coffee fits into people?s ?daily grind? in the workplace. For example:

  • Let?s drink two:?Sixty-three percent (63%) of workers who drink coffee actually drink two cups or more each workday. Twenty-eight percent drink three cups or more.
  • Coffee helps younger workers in particular stay productive:?The majority of younger workers need coffee for energy and motivation, as 62% of workers aged 18 to 24 say they are less productive without coffee, with 58% of workers aged 25 to 34 making the same claim.
  • Workers in the Northeast are cup champions:?Fifty-five percent (55%) of workers claim to drink at least one cup of coffee each workday. Geographically, 64 percent of workers in the Northeast drink at least one cup per day, compared to the South at 54 percent and the Midwest and West at 51 percent.
  • Higher productivity boost for women:?Overall, 43 percent of workers who drink coffee claim they are less productive without their cup of Joe. Forty-seven percent (47%) of female workers claim they are less productive without coffee, compared to 40% of male workers.

According to John Costello, Chief Global Marketing and Innovation Officer at Dunkin? Brands, ?On National Coffee Day we celebrate the important and unique role coffee plays as a vital part of our daily lives. As these survey results show, coffee continues to become more and more essential in the workplace in particular, helping workers across all professions stay productive throughout the workday,? he said.

According to Cynthia McIntyre, Vice President of Marketing & Communications at CareerBuilder, ?There?s a reason why coffee is a staple in the workplace. Workers report that coffee fuels higher energy and productivity, and serves as a means to socialize with colleagues.?

Microfluidic device: Hundreds of biochemical analyses on a single chip

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? Scientists at Ecole Polytechnique F?d?rale de Lausanne and the University of Geneva have developed a microfluidic device smaller than a domino that can simultaneously measure up to 768 biomolecular interactions.

Inside our cells, molecules are constantly binding and separating from one another. It's this game of constant flux that drives gene expression asides essentially every other biological process.

Understanding the specific details of how these interactions take place is thus crucial to our overall understanding of the fundamental mechanisms of living organisms. There are millions of possible combinations of molecules, however; determining all of them would be a Herculean task. Various tools have been developed to measure the degree of affinity between a strand of DNA and its transcription factor. They provide an indication of the strength of the affinity between them.

"Commercial" devices, however, have one main drawback: many preliminary manipulations are necessary before an experiment can be carried out, and even then, the experiment can only focus on a dozen interactions at a time.

Microns-wide channels

As part of his doctoral research at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), Sebastian Maerkl designed a device that he named "MITOMI" -- a small device containing hundreds of microfluidic channels equipped with pneumatic valves. This week Maerkl, who is now an assistant professor in EPFL's Bioengineering Institute, is publishing an article describing the next step in the evolution of the device in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). The new version, "k-MITOMI," was developed in the context of the SystemsX.ch RTD DynamiX in cooperation with the University of Geneva.

This microfluidic device has 768 chambers, each one with a valve that allows DNA and transcription factors to interact in a very carefully controlled manner. "In traditional methods, we generally manage to determine if an interaction takes place or not, and then we restart the experiment with another gene or another transcription factor," Maerkl explains. "Our device goes much further, because it allows us to measure the affinity and kinetics of the interaction."

The strength of the device lies in a sort of "push-button" in its microreactors. A protein substrate is immobilized on the device; above it circulates a solution containing DNA moelcules. The push-button is activated at regular intervals of a few milliseconds, trapping protein-DNA complexes that form on the surface of the device. "Then we close the lid, and fluorescence reveals the exact number of bound molecules," explains Maerkl. "We can also observe how long these molecules remain bound."

In addition to providing quantitative kinetic information, the k-MITOMI device can work in a "massively parallel" manner. Each of the 768 independent chambers can simultaneously analyze different molecule pairs. It can also be used to synthesize proteins in vitro, with a massive reduction in time and number of manipulations compared to the traditional method, which involves producing proteins inside a living organism such as a bacterium, purifying, and putting them in contact with the genes to be studied.

"The number of protein-protein and protein-DNA interactions that remain to be characterized is phenomenal. Our device not only allows us to accelerate the acquisition of this information, which is crucial to our understanding of living organisms, but it also meets a need for the production of specific proteins," adds Maerkl.

Three Steps That may help you Measure Your Web 2 . 0 Campaign ...

Social media is an extremely important component in many marketing campaigns in the present day. A great number of and businesses are realizing its reach and impact, and that?s why they have really moved up their social networking campaigns.?

Examples of this can be to boost people to your internet site by 50%, set up a Facebook Fan Page greater than 1,000 fans, increase subscribers to the blog by 20%, increase URL clicks by 100%, et cetera.

    Identify tools for measurement

There are many tools you need to use to measure social websites. Google Analytics and

Feedburner, one example is, are two excellent and free tools that assist analyze the visitors to your blog or website, subscriber count, keyword optimization, as well as other trends.

Social bookmarking tools can also be worthwhile in seeing that is adding your internet site, article or blogs to sites for example Delicious, Stumbleupon and Reddit.

If you?ve formed a residential district around your brand or business, then you can certainly measure how effective your social networking campaign is by the sheer numbers of fellow member registrations you obtain.

If you and your business features a profile on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube or LinkedIn, you can even monitor the quantity of friends you could have, facts fans your page has, the quantity of people following you, the quantity of retweets your message gets, etc.

You like to see if your posts are getting comments, encouraging interaction, and so forth.

Your site might also present an email campaign, and you will easily look into the number of folks are with your subsciber lists, the number of actually received your email, and how may be the clicking on the URLs as part of the campaign.

    Assessment and reevaluation

It is essential that you continually assess and reassess how your social media campaigns do. Though you?re doing quantitative measuring, additionally you must evaluate how your campaigns are performing qualitatively.

For example, you may be finding a wide range of participation with your Facebook Fan Page, but suppose the feedback is far more negative, ya think which will help you in your campaign? Well, with negative publicity, it?s always best to immediately address your client?s concerns and take action. This tends to show existing and prospective customers that you?re not brushing off their feedback knowning that you?re prepared work something by helping cover their them.

Though your last goal is ultimately to extend sales or revenue, it?s truly challenging to appraise the value of your visit, comment, friend or link. But a majority likely, the harder traffic, participation and brand awareness you obtain within your web 2 . 0 campaign, the additionally likely more and more men and women become familiar with your products or services and consider obtaining them.

Measuring social media marketing can be really tricky, therefore it may be challenging to determine the achievements of your campaigns. But hopefully, these steps will help you in forming a framework on your social media marketing campaign, and produce your goals more tangible and available.

Oil takes sudden plunge, loses 2.4 percent

NEW YORK (AP) ? Oil plunged suddenly Monday afternoon, dropping more than $4 per barrel at one point in a dramatic end to an otherwise quiet trading day in New York,

Benchmark crude fell $2.38, or 2.4 percent, to finish at $96.62 on the New York Mercantile Exchange. That's the biggest percentage decline since July 23. Oil plunged below $95 per barrel during the sell-off.

Traders were unsure of the cause of Monday's price drop. Some questioned whether an errant trade or another rumor about a release of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve was to blame.

The White House has been considering tapping the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to stem the rising cost of crude and gasoline. A little over a week ago, Reuters reported the Obama administration was considering a release much larger than the 30 million barrels from last year.

Oil rose 2.7 percent last week after getting a boost from the U.S. Federal Reserve's latest plan to boost the U.S. economy. It held to slight gains above $99 for most of Monday.

Brent crude, which is used to price international varieties of oil, fell sharply as well. Brent lost $2.91, or 2.9 percent, to $113.77 on the ICE Futures Exchange in London.

NATO scales back Afghan partnering after attacks

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? NATO said Monday that it has scaled back operations with Afghan soldiers and policemen to lower the risk of insider attacks and reduce local tensions over an anti-Islam video that prompted protests in Afghanistan.

It's the second order that curbs contact between foreign troops and their Afghan partners, undermining the mantra that both sides are fighting the Taliban "shoulder to shoulder." The directive could jeopardize the U.S.-led coalition's key goal to get Afghan forces ready to take over security from foreign forces by the end of 2014 ? just 27 months from now.

Until now, coalition troops routinely conducted operations such as patrolling or manning outposts with their Afghan counterparts. Under the new rules issued on Sunday by Lt. Gen. James Terry, such operations are no longer routine and require the approval of the regional commander.

Insider attacks have spiked in recent months.

So far this year, 51 international troops have been killed by Afghan forces or militants wearing their uniforms ? a development that has fractured the trust between NATO troops and their Afghan allies. The disturbing trend comes as Afghans chanting "Death to America" have staged several recent protests against an anti-Islam film produced in the U.S. The film also sparked demonstrations in other nations.

A protest in Kabul over the film that mocks the Prophet Muhammad turned violent Monday, with hundreds of men torching tires, cars and shipping containers and lobbing rocks at a U.S. base on the edge of the capital. More than 20 police officers were injured by rocks before the protesters were finally dispersed by officers shooting in the air, officials said.

"Recent events outside of and inside Afghanistan related to the 'Innocence of Muslims' video, plus the conduct of recent insider attacks, have given cause for ISAF troops to exercise increased vigilance and carefully review all activities and interactions with the local population," said coalition spokesman Jamie Graybeal.

Earlier this month, the U.S. military stopped training about 1,000 members of the Afghan Local Police, a controversial network of village-defense units that is growing but remains a fraction of the country's army and police force, which will soon be 352,000 strong.

The coalition downplayed the impact of the directive, saying international forces had not stopped partnering and advising Afghan forces. Coalition officials said the directive was given at the recommendation of ? and in conjunction with ?key Afghan leaders.

U.S.-led coalition companies remain partnered with Afghan units, but have changed the way they conduct their daily partnering operations, the coalition said.

"In the past, elements of a company routinely conducted operations ? like patrolling or manning an outpost ? with elements of the Afghan battalion," the coalition said in emailed statements to The Associated Press.

Under the directive, these operations are no longer routine and now require the approval of the general in charge of their regions.

The order will be in place for an undetermined period of time, according to Lt. Col. Rich Spiegel, chief public affairs officer for the coalition's operational command.

"It doesn't mean we're walking away from these units. We can advise from the next level up," he said. "It means we may not be out on patrol with them."

Both the U.S. and Afghan authorities have already taken other steps to lessen the risks of attacks.

Earlier this year, the U.S. commanders assigned some troops to be "guardian angels" who watch over their comrades in interactions with Afghan forces and even as they sleep. The U.S. also started allowing Americans to carry weapons in several Afghan ministries and made security more of a consideration in evaluating visits to Afghan government offices. U.S. officials also recently ordered American troops to carry loaded weapons at all times in Afghanistan, even when they are on their bases.

Afghan authorities recently detained or removed hundreds of soldiers because they had submitted incomplete or forged documents to the military. The Defense Ministry did not say whether any were connected to the Taliban or other insurgent groups, but noted that some were suspected of having had contacts with militants.

On Sunday evening, the coalition said an Afghan soldier fired on a vehicle he believed was driven by NATO soldiers on a shared base in southern Afghanistan, slightly wounding a foreign civilian worker. The soldier turned his weapon on a vehicle that was driving inside Camp Garmser, a shared base in Helmand, said NATO forces spokesman Maj. Adam Wojack. Another Afghan soldier disarmed the attacker and took him into custody. The assailant told interrogators he had thought he was targeting troops, Wojack said.

That shooting came the same day an Afghan police officer shot and killed four American service members in Zabul, also in the south. That followed a shooting Saturday in which a man wearing the uniform of a government-backed militia group killed two British soldiers in Helmand province.

The insider assaults drew unusually strong comment Sunday from the U.S. military's top officer, Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, who called the problem of rogue Afghan soldiers and police attacking allied troops "a very serious threat" to the war effort. Dempsey said something has to change in order to address the escalating problem, suggesting that Afghans need to take the matter as seriously as the Americans do.

But U.S. and NATO officials appeared to be stepping back from that assessment on Monday. U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said in a visit to Tokyo that the insider attacks are a "last gasp" of a Taliban insurgency that has not been able to regain lost ground. And the top spokesman for the coalition in Afghanistan, German Brig. Gen. Gunter Katz, told reporters in Kabul that Afghan officials were taking appropriate measures to try to prevent attacks.

"The Afghans started, according to their own reports, a re-vetting of their own soldiers and policemen and have already relieved a couple of hundred from active duty," Katz said. He also noted that the Afghan forces have increased training about cultural differences between the two forces.

Katz said the quick reaction of Afghan forces to the attack at Camp Garmser showed that they were taking such attacks seriously. "It was members of the Afghan national army who reacted instantly and detained that shooter," Katz said.

A spokesman for Afghan President Hamid Karzai said the Afghan government is making every effort to stop the attacks, noting that Karzai has made it a priority in meetings.

"The president himself has taken this issue very seriously," spokesman Aimal Faizi said.

Wholesale inventories rise could help growth in third quarter

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Wholesale inventories in July rose by the most in five months, beating forecasts and suggesting economic growth started the third quarter on slightly better footing than expected.

A separate report on Wednesday showed import prices rose in August as the cost of imported oil jumped, a factor that could weigh on American consumers and temporarily boost inflation.

Wholesale inventories climbed 0.7 percent in July to $485.2 billion, the Commerce Department said. Sales unexpectedly fell, dropping 0.1 percent.

Inventories are a key element in the government's measure of changes in gross domestic product. Weaker growth in inventories dragged on GDP during the second quarter, when the economy expanded at a 1.7 percent annual rate.

July's gain in inventories was enough for some economists to slightly raise forecasts for third-quarter GDP, although others said the drop in sales negated the boost.

"It just shifts the balance of growth from sales to inventories," said Daniel Silver, an economist at JPMorgan in New York.

U.S. economic growth has been woefully slow since the 2007-2009 recession and too weak to push the unemployment rate below 8 percent. The sluggish economy has fueled expectations the Federal Reserve could try to lower borrowing costs by announcing a bond buying program as soon as Thursday.

In July, automobile inventories rose 0.4 percent and computer equipment stocks jumped 3.8 percent, while metals fell 0.7 percent.

Before the inventory data was published, economists were expecting GDP growth in the third quarter to match the second quarter's lackluster pace, according to a Reuters poll.

With the data in hand, Barclays raised its estimate for third quarter growth by two tenths of a point to a 2.2 percent rate. Macroeconomic Advisers lifted their forecast by a tenth to 1.4 percent.

Financial markets largely ignored the data. U.S. stocks rose, boosted by the decision of a top German court to support the euro zone's new 700-billion-euro bailout fund in the latest effort to stem the region's debt crisis. Yields on U.S. government debt also rose.

The European debt crisis looms as a major threat to the U.S. recovery from the 2007-2009 recession.

ENERGY PRICE PRESSURE

In a separate report, the Labor Department said U.S. import prices rose in August for the first time in five months, climbing 0.7 percent.

The cost of petroleum imports increased 4.1 percent. Higher prices at the pump threaten to hurt consumers' pocket books. Analysts had expected overall import prices would rise 1.4 percent in August.

Many economists expect higher fuel costs will contribute to a short-term rise in inflation that could be seen in a report due on Friday on consumer prices.

"Significant energy price gains are likely to be a feature," said Barclays economist Peter Newland.

There was little sign of broader inflation pressures in the import data. Non-petroleum import prices declined 0.2 percent, a sign that the cooling global economy is reducing companies' ability to raise prices.

Prices for imported consumer goods outside automobiles fell 0.3 percent, while prices were flat for cars and auto parts brought into the country.

Import prices were flat from major trading partners Japan and China. Import prices from the European Union fell 0.4 percent.

The report also showed export prices rose 0.9 percent last month. Analysts had expected export prices to rise 0.4 percent.

Japan aims for zero nuclear power in 2030s: media

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan aims to quit nuclear power in the 2030s in a new energy strategy to be unveiled soon, media said on Wednesday, a major shift from a pre-Fukushima disaster goal of boosting atomic energy to produce more than half the country's electricity.

The March 2011 earthquake and tsunami triggered three meltdowns at Tokyo Electric Power Co's Fukushima Daiichi plant, spewing radiation and forcing about 160,000 people to flee their homes.

It also prompted the government to scrap a 2010 plan to boost nuclear power's share of electricity to more than 50 percent by 2030.

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda said on Monday that he wanted to decide on the new policy this week and would take into account a proposal by his Democratic Party for Japan to "invest all possible policy resources to make it possible to exit nuclear power in the 2030s".

Noda's new energy strategy, however, is unlikely to silence Japan's grassroots anti-nuclear movement or resolve a fierce debate over whether reducing atomic power's role will do more harm or good to the economy.

And with the Democrats likely to lose a general election expected within months, there was no guarantee that any new government would follow his stance.

Japan's powerful business lobbies argue that abandoning nuclear energy in favor of fossil fuels and renewable sources such as solar and wind power will raise electricity prices, making the country's industry uncompetitive and pushing production abroad.

Anti-nuclear advocates counter that a policy shift will create new openings for corporate profits in areas such as renewable energy and energy efficiency that will spark innovation and give the economy a boost.

The government has been considering three options for nuclear power's share of electric supply: zero as soon as possible, 15 percent by 2030 and 20-25 percent by the same date.

Surveys show that a majority of voters favor exiting nuclear power sooner or later.

Noda's decision to restart two reactors to avoid potential outages this summer galvanized anti-nuclear protests. The country's other 48 reactors remain idled for safety checks.

LTE iPhone 5 coming to EE and Three in UK, but not O2 and Vodafone

Brits ready to stake their preorder claim this Friday might have a harder time deciding between the myriad of networks offering the device. While all of the major UK carriers will be ready to offer you the iPhone 5, that LTE radio will only be working on the newly-christened EE from the start -- with Three likely to use that purchased spectrum to similar effect in the near-future. Unfortunately for Vodafone and O2, the forthcoming Ofcom spectrum auction is gearing up to sell off the 800MHz (Band 20) and 2.6GHz (Band 7) frequencies -- neither of which are found on Apple's multiple iPhone 5 models, and the latter being a bigger problem in Europe and Asia, where LTE networks already make use of the 2.6GHz frequency. However, Apple have followed up an initial phone launch with additional network-specific models before -- so we there's a slim chance we could see another model at a later date. All the UK carriers are keeping their contract prices a tightly-guarded secret at the moment, but we'll update as soon as we hear more. Meanwhile, those on that little European isle can expect to pay £529 for the entry-level iPhone 5 from the source when pre-orders start this Friday.

Spain takes 1st step toward bid to win 4 straight

By PAUL LOGOTHETIS

MADRID (AP) - Perfect in qualifying for tournaments since 2007 with 22 consecutive victories, Spain visits Georgia on Tuesday to take its first step toward the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and what would be an unprecedented fourth straight major title.

Spain retained the European Championship title earlier this year without career scoring leader David Villa, who returned from a broken leg for Friday's 5-0 exhibition rout of Saudi Arabia. Spain's last competitive loss was to Switzerland at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

"Playing in a World Cup in Brazil is something really important," midfielder Xavi Hernandez said on Monday.

Villa scored in his first international match since last year, adding to an already potent attack led by Fernando Torres, David Silva and Pedro Rodriguez. No team has won consecutive World Cups since Brazil in 1958 and 1962.

"Being world and European champion doesn't guarantee you anything," Xavi said. "These are difficult matches. It's not going to be easy at all to get to the World Cup, even if some already think it's a done deal."

European qualifying began Friday, with Italy the only top team that failed to start with a victory.

A 2-2 draw at Bulgaria in Group B angered supporters. The Azzurri host 139th-ranked Malta.

"Our performance in Sofia was unacceptable," Italy coach Cesare Prandelli said. "It's right that the marks in the newspapers were low. The squad was the most experienced that I've had in my two years as coach, which shows that the things you learn can be forgotten."

The Netherlands, Germany, Portugal, England and France all will try for 2-0 starts. While England routed Moldova 5-0 in Group H and the Dutch beat Turkey 2-0 in a potentially tricky Group D opener, Portugal was far from impressive in rallying to defeat Luxembourg 2-1.

Germany was expected to beat Faeroe Islands by a bigger margin than 3-0. France, which is in the same group as Spain, defeated Finland 1-0.

On Tuesday, France takes on Belarus - the team that stunned Les Bleus with a surprise 1-0 win in Saint-Denis at the start of Euro 2012 qualifying - and coach Didier Deschamps wants more from his forwards, who haven't scored in the team's past five matches. Karim Benzema has not scored in 11 games for club and country.

"We need to become more dangerous," said Deschamps, who also has Spain to contend with in qualifying. "Getting an attack to function is the hardest thing to do. (Against Finland) either we held onto the ball too long, or we didn't give it properly, or there weren't enough numbers up front."

Germany travels to Austria buoyed by a seven-match winning streak over its neighbor.

"It's going to be a heated encounter between neighbors in a sold-out stadium," Germany captain Philipp Lahm said.

England will be without Chelsea defenders Ashley Cole and John Terry for its home match against Ukraine due to injuries.

After its biggest road margin of victory in 19 years, England figures to have a tougher test in Ukraine. England beat Ukraine 1-0 in the first round of this year's European Championship.

"Ukraine are a quality team. They showed that in glimpses in the game during the European Championship," England midfielder Frank Lampard said. "They are certainly going to come to Wembley with intentions to make it difficult for us and show what they are about, so we will have to be on top form."

There are 25 qualifiers in Europe, while in South America, Argentina is likely to maintain its lead atop the standings.

Argentina defeated Paraguay 3-1 on Friday with goals from Lionel Messi, Angel Di Maria and Gonzalo Higuain, and will be favored at Peru.

Through six matches, the Argentines lead South America with 13 points, followed by Chile and Ecuador with 12, Uruguay with 11 and Colombia with 10.

Radamel Falcao has carried over his club form to the national team after scoring in a 4-0 rout of Uruguay. The Atletico Madrid striker has seven goals in his past three games.

Colombia, whose last appearance at the World Cup was in 1998, faces a tough trip to Chile. Paraguay plays Venezuela, and Uruguay faces Ecuador.

Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender & Queer Jamaica: World Suicide ...

See discussion HERE?from TVJ but the entity named is a faith based one and may not offer LGBT specific interventions to deal with the attendant issues however some salient points were brought out, in a subsequent radio interview with the gentleman above he said Choose Life International had a mix of psycho-social, spiritual and other support mechanisms to handle cases that he says almost come in on a daily basis. Men seem to be more inclined to commit suicide and employ more drastic measures in ending their lives as females being the social creatures they are tend to seek some sort of closure before actually planning their exit.

The LGBT community just going from memory as there are no formal statistics available on the suicide rates specific to us locally has had its share of persons resorting to ending their own lives, cases or persons who I knew seem to have hinted to or successfully ended their lives because of some of the?following?reasons:

1) rejection from family members and feeling as outcasts

2) very little social support from friends

3) lack of social services towards the LGBT community in developing social intelligence so persons can gage challenges?early?and seek help

4) lack of proper pyscho social support to address depression, stress especially those persons who are victims of homophobia, lesbophobia and homo negative trauma

5) the poor skills of some faith based persons and entities in?engaging?suspected suicidal tendencies?

6) feeling dirty and filthy after a corrective rape or sexual abuse episode as experienced by same gender loving females

7) the taking for granted hints to suicidal tendencies expressed to friends as they are sometimes dismissed as a joke then comes the bad news after the fact

8) feelings of being a burden to friends and family post a homophobic episode while recovering in the company of others

Loss of my friend?surprisingly:

Some years ago I lost a good friend to suicide that left sections of the community asking how come or why? he locked himself in his?Mercedes?and attached a hose from the exhaust pipe to the interior of the car overnight as he was found by the household help in the morning. Robert Cork was an ally for me in my early years of advocacy and we worked closely at the time in some programs with an array of NGOs. There were no visible signs to us or at best to me at the time that he was undergoing some trying issues in his life when one judges he was socially upward with all the materialistic trappings, his businesses seems to have been going on fairly well yet he took such a final decision. This was a man who would counsel other persons in their own personal challenges so it was really a surprise as the news spread then. Many were angry including myself and we asked why?didn't?he say something maybe we could have helped but it was not to be. I won't share the subsequent reasons that were revealed but it shows the challenges that sometimes it is hard to tell or predict when this may strike from someone close to us

Another case I can recall:

A same gender loving female with bipolar disorder locally was the victim of a brutal series of abuses and gang rape in her community some 5 years ago, the men upon suspecting she was a lesbian decided to enact the corrective rape formulae to enact their brand of justice, after seeking help and relocating from her depressed area where she originally hailed recovery was painful and her thoughts of suicide was repeatedly expressed were dismissed as just jokes or expressions of basic frustrations, it was not until she decided to overdose on pills even while having drugs for her bipolar issue and seeking counseling (outside of the LGBT circles) she has since recovered thankfully and is now abroad as he asylum case came through.

As indicated in my introduction the real stats in the LGBT community are hard to come by but we may need to begin to keep a track of this problem though not a major issue at this time.

Hints to suicide

It is a well-known fact that as a person begins to climb from depression the possibility of a suicide attempt increases. There are two thoughts as to why this happens. The first is that when a person makes up their mind to take their own life, they become more at peace with the situation. They feel more in control and thus the depression begins to lighten. The second idea is that as lethargy lifts, a person finds the energy to carry out suicidal plans made while incapacitated. Regardless of the reason, however, this is a very critical time.

Behavioral Indicators
Acquiring a Weapon
Hoarding Medication
Putting Affairs in Order
Making or Changing a Will
Increased Interest in Suicide
Giving Away Personal Belongings
Mending Grievances
Checking on Insurance Policy
Withdrawing from People

Verbal Indicators
Straightforward Comments:

"I wish I were dead"
"I wish I had the nerve to kill myself."
"I wish I could die in my sleep."
"If it weren't for my kids, my husband ... I would commit suicide."

Hints:
"I hate life."
"Why do I bother?"
"I can't take it anymore."
"Nothing matters anymore."

Note that these signs are not proof positive that someone is considering suicide. Any number of these signs may be evident, but the person has given little or no thought to taking their own life. The reverse is also true. A person may give no warning of an impending suicide attempt. So how do you know for sure? Ask. Yes, ask! Be open to discussing this difficult subject with your loved one. It could save a life.

Police officer killed in Turkey suicide attack

ISTANBUL (AP) ? A suicide bomber threw a hand grenade and blew himself up at a police station in Turkey's biggest city on Tuesday, killing one police officer and wounding seven other people, authorities said.

Ambulances raced to the scene of the blast in an Istanbul suburb after the attack. Forensic investigators then moved in, combing the area in front of the building for evidence.

The city's police chief, Huseyin Capkin the station, said the assailant was a 25-year-old man.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Fighting between Turkish forces and Kurdish rebels who seek self-rule has surged in recent months. The military announced Monday that it had conducted air strikes over the past week in northern Iraq, where Kurdish rebels have bases. Some 25 guerrillas were killed in the operation, according to the military.

Authorities blamed the rebel Kurdistan Workers' Party for a bomb last month that killed nine people near a police station in a city close to the Syrian border. Rebels denied involvement, though they have escalated attacks in what some analysts believe is an attempt to capitalize on regional uncertainty surrounding the civil war in Syria.

Built-in germanium lasers could make computer chips faster

ScienceDaily (Sep. 10, 2012) ? Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) researchers have investigated how they could make the semiconductor Germanium emit laser light. As a laser material, Germanium together with Silicon could form the basis for innovative computer chips in which information would be transferred partially in the form of light. This technology would revolutionise data streaming within chips and give a boost to the performance of electronics. The researchers have demonstrated that Germanium must be put under strain by an external force in order to turn it into a laser material.

The decisive investigations were carried out by the scientists at the Swiss Light Source (SLS) at PSI and their results have recently appeared in the scientific journal Physical Review Letters. The research was supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).

In 1965, Gordon Moore proposed a law stating that the surface density of transistors in computer chips -- and consequently their computing power -- would double every two years. This law has proved to be valid since the beginning of the digital age; that is, since the introduction of the first integrated circuits for micro-processors, in 1960. However, in spite of the increasing number of transistors in computer chips, as well as other progress which has been made, the overall performance of processors has not been able to follow Moore's Law for the past decade, and specialists are now talking about 'Moore's Gap'. The reason for this is that modern chips have more cores -- individual processors -- that can only relatively slowly communicate with each other using current technology.

"Actually, we do know a way in which this gap can be closed. The key concept is "optical data transfer" between the different cores on the chip," explains Hans Sigg, a PSI scientist. "This means partially transferring information inside a chip with the aid of laser pulses, which would significantly speed up the information exchange." In order to do this, tiny lasers are needed which can be built into chips to send out light pulses. These, however, have so far not been available.

Tiny Germanium Lasers should make Chips faster

Sigg's research team, together with colleagues from the ETH Zurich and the Politecnico di Milano, has now been able to demonstrate that Germanium, under certain conditions, can function as a laser material. "Germanium lasers could make a break-through possible here, because Germanium can be readily combined with Silicon, which is the basic material from which chips are made. Silicon itself cannot emit light and can hardly be combined with any available laser material," points out Sigg.

In their studies, which were performed at the Swiss Light Source (SLS) at PSI, the researchers investigated those properties of Germanium that are important for the generation of laser light, and compared them with those of currently available laser materials. "We stimulate the material by means of a powerful laser and simultaneously observe the changes occurring using infra-red radiation from the SLS," elucidates the doctoral student Peter Friedli, who carried out the decisive experiments together with scientist Lee Carroll. "To do this, we used the fact that these light pulses are only 100 picoseconds (i.e. 0.1 billionths of a second) long, allowing us to follow the relevant processes in the material; that is, the behaviour of electrons at different points in time."

Germanium must be deformed

"Our results are, on the one hand, encouraging, because Germanium behaves similarly to traditional laser materials, and therefore the possibility of it emitting light cannot be excluded," says Sigg enthusiastically, "but with the limitation that the balance between amplification and loss is still so unfavourable in the Germanium layers investigated so far that the material does not yet fulfil the condition for emitting laser light." But it has been demonstrated that this condition can be more closely approached the more the Germanium is put under strain using an external force. The researchers hope to achieve the necessary conditions for the Germanium in a follow-up project. For this, they will use a new technology that allows the strain to be greatly increased.

This research project has been supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).
