Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes split after five years of marriage

Holmes and Cruise were once so lovey-dovey. ( Eric Charbonneau/WireImage)Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are divorcing after five years of marriage, reports People magazine. According to the actress? attorney Jonathan Wolfe, ?This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family. Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest."

Soon after Holmes' announcement, Cruise released his own statement on the split. "Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and isconcentrating on his three children," his rep tells People."Please allow them their privacy to work this out."

Holmes filed in New York on Thursday, and according to TMZ, she is seeking sole custody and "primary residency custody" of Suri, 6, as well as a "suitable amount" of child support. The site also reports that the couple has a prenup. Together, they are worth a reported $275 million, with

Cruise earning the bulk of that.

The Hollywood couple wed in a lavish ceremony in Italy in November 2006 with their daughter Suri, then just a baby, by their side. It was the first marriage for Holmes and the third for Cruise, who was previously wed to Nicole Kidman and Mimi Rogers.

Cruise, who turns

50 on Monday, and Holmes, 33, have not been seen together in public since February

when they attended an Oscars party together. The actress did not accompany her

husband on the red carpet for any of his ?Rock of Ages? premieres and was

noticeably absent when he received the Friars Foundation's Entertainment

Icon Award on June 12 ? a big deal

considering he is only one of four people to ever get the honor. Her excuse?

Holmes had to appear at an ice skating event in China. Instead, Cruise brought

along Suri as his date, as well as his 17-year-old son Connor (whom he adopted with previous wife Nicole Kidman). "[Katie's]

in China working," he said during his speech. "The women are all

working. So Suri is my date this evening. Suri, thank you. My son Connor is

[also] here. You guys really inspire me."

Holmes, who has been in New York City with Suri while

Cruise has been filming in Iceland, hasn't exactly been acting like a woman

upset over the ending of her marriage. In recent weeks, the former ?Dawson?s Creek? star has

looked happier than she has in a long time, smiling for the

cameras, walking around Manhattan, and hanging out with pals ? which ironically

is exactly how she was living her life before Cruise mysteriously swept her off

her feet in April 2005, just weeks after she split from fianc? Chris Klein.

On May 23 of that year, Cruise made quite a spectacle of his new love

when he infamously jumped on the couch on ?The Oprah Winfrey Show? and pumped

his fists for joy, as he gushed to the talk show host. ?What has happened to

you?? joked Winfrey. ?This is how I feel about it,? replied an elated Cruise. ?I?m

in love!? Less than a month later, he proposed to Holmes, then just 26, atop of

the Eiffel Tower in Paris. And if it wasn?t whirlwind enough, in October of

that year, the two announced they were expecting their first child together.

Daughter Suri was born in May 2006. Although Cruise and Holmes often said they

couldn?t wait to have more children, they never did.

HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE may hit Verizon on July 5th

HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE may hit Verizon on July 5th

The bad news: if you've been hoping to grab a Droid Incredible 4G LTE so you can show it off to your friends at your local July 4th extravaganza, you're out of luck. The good news: you might be able to cheer up from your post-holiday depression the very next day. According to internal employee docs captured by Droid-Life, we should expect Verizon's first Sense 4 device to arrive at stores on July 5th for $200 with a two-year contract. As always, pricing and availability are never set in stone; after all, internal employee docs gave us false hope that the Motorola Droid 4 would show up several weeks before it actually launched, but that was likely a result of Verizon pulling the launch at the last minute. Provided Big Red doesn't change its mind (or other snafus throw a wrench into the process), we won't be disappointed this time around.

Possible details of Google Nexus tablet emerge

1 day

Google I/O, the search engine giant's annual developer conference kicks off on June 27. As usual, things will start with a keynote, which may include some product announcements. One blog claims that it already knows which gadget?Google will show off?? a tablet dubbed "Nexus 7."

Gizmodo Australia's Luke Hopewell writes that?the blog's staff has "viewed a training document detailing exactly what?s going to be in the new tablet and how much it?s going to cost."?

According to Hopewell, the tablet will be a 7-inch device built by Asus ??which fits with earlier reports???and contain a 1.3Ghz quad-core Tegra 3 processor, GeForce 12-core GPU and 1GB of RAM.?The tablet will be come in 8GB and 16 GB versions, Hopewell explains. Its screen will supposedly be an IPS?display "with a 178-degree viewing angle, running a resolution of 1280 by 800." (This again matches a prior report by DigiTimes.)

Additionally, there will supposedly be NFC, Google Wallet, and Android Beam technology built into the device along with a 1.2 megapixel front-facing camera. The battery inside the Nexus 7 will offer 9 hours of operating time.

Hopewell writes that the?8GB version of the tablet will cost $199 and that the 16GB version will cost $249.?(Previous reports suggested that prices would range between $149 and $249, for reference.)

While leaks, rumors, and vaguely sourced reports should always be taken with a large dash of salt, there's been a lot of consistency regarding this particular device. We wouldn't be surprised if we saw it in a couple of days, at the Google I/O keynote in San Francisco, from where we'll be reporting live.

Arizona beats S Carolina 5-1 in CWS finals opener

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) ? Arizona followed its script to perfection in Game 1 of the College World Series finals.

Konner Wade did his part, pitching his third straight complete game. Robert Refsnyder did his, leading the Wildcats' potent offense with a home run for the second straight game.

The Wildcats led all the way Sunday night in a 5-1 victory over two-time defending national champion South Carolina and now stand a victory away from their first title since 1986 and fourth overall.

"Tonight's over. It's done with. You've got to come out tomorrow and play good baseball," Arizona coach Andy Lopez said. "We understand where we're at. These guys understand who they're playing. They understand it's not a tournament somewhere in South Dakota."

The Gamecocks (49-19) swept UCLA and Florida in the best-of-three finals the past two years, but need to beat Arizona twice to become the first team since Southern California in the early 1970s to win three championships in a row.

"Tomorrow's a new day," South Carolina center fielder Evan Marzilli said. "So we have to come out tomorrow and pretend like nothing ever happened and go out and hopefully get a win."

The Wildcats have relied on the same template during a run that has seen them win 10 straight games and 17 of 19.

With an inexperienced and inconsistent bullpen, Lopez wants his starters to go as deep into games as possible.

Wade (11-3) threw an efficient 110 pitches in his sixth complete game of the season and limited the Gamecocks to six hits.

Wade has won four straight starts in the postseason. He worked eight innings against Louisville in regionals, nine in the super regional-winning victory over St. John's, and threw a complete-game shutout against UCLA last Sunday.

The sophomore's back-to-back complete games were the first at the CWS since Cal State Fullerton's Jason Windsor did it in 2004.

Wade is 4-0 with a 1.29 in four NCAA tournament starts (35 innings, five earned runs). He struck out three. His walk to Christian Walker in the sixth was the first he issued in 31 innings.

"My past two starts I had the same mentality ? throw strikes and try to get ground balls," he said. "I'm not going to have a lot of strikeouts, obviously. I just tried to work ahead of guys. I knew that they were a pretty aggressive team and they were going to try to take the extra base. So I tried to work ahead and get in counts that were favorable to me."

The Arizona bullpen was inactive until Walker singled leading off the ninth. Wade got a fly out, groundout and foul out to end the game.

"We just couldn't get in a situation to do anything offensively," Gamecocks coach Ray Tanner said. "He kept making big pitches when he needed to. And they played solid defense out there. And we tried to make a run at them."

The Wildcats, whose .330 average ranks fourth in the nation, had 12 hits against three pitchers.

Refsnyder, batting .444 (8 of 18) in the CWS, went 2 for 3 and was intentionally walked twice. He hit a two-run homer off Forrest Koumas (2-3) in the first to give Arizona the lead, and scored in the fifth on Bobby Brown's single to make it a four-run game.

His home run to right was the first allowed by South Carolina in 77 innings.

"How about an opposite-field home run in this park," Tanner said. "When he touched the ball, that ball's been hit hard but I expected it to be maybe off the warning track, one hop to the fence, but that was impressive. That's why he's one of the better players in the country."

Refsnyder, who has eight homers this season, also went deep Thursday in the Wildcats' bracket-winning victory over Florida State.

"Any time you can get a little bit of a lead for Konner ? I can't remember the last time we got a lead for Konner where he didn't give it up," Refsnyder said. "It helped Konner's confidence to get him a few runs and helped the team. South Carolina is two-time defending champ, and anytime you can get ahead of a team like that, it helps because you're going to need every run against them."

Refsnyder also showed off his arm in right field, throwing out Adam Matthews when he tried to go from first to third on Kyle Martin's single in the seventh.

Arizona, which hasn't trailed in the CWS, scored unearned runs in the third and fifth innings.

No. 9 batter Trent Gilbert reached to start the third when shortstop Joey Pankake flubbed his grounder. Gilbert moved to third on Joey Rickard's hit and scored on Alex Mejia's single to left.

Seth Mejias-Brean drove in a run in the fifth after Johnny Field reached third on a wild pitch and error.

South Carolina cut it to 4-1 in sixth on Evan Marzilli's RBI single, the first run allowed by Wade in 15 innings.

The loss ended the Gamecocks' streak of yielding two runs or less in four straight CWS games.

South Carolina already has fought off elimination twice in the CWS. The Gamecocks had their 22-game NCAA tournament win streak end last Monday with a 2-1 loss to Arkansas. They came back to beat Kent State and Arkansas twice to reach the finals.

"It's a best-of-three game series for a reason," catcher Grayson Greiner said. "We have to come out and fight tomorrow. We were in the same situation a few days ago. They've got to beat us twice to win the championship, and the best team will have to win two games."

Chinese spacecraft docks with orbiting module

A Chinese spacecraft carrying three astronauts docked manually with an orbiting module on Sunday, a first for the country as it strives to match American and Russian exploits in space.

The Shenzhou 9 capsule's maneuver with the Tiangong 1 module was shown live on national television. It follows a docking last week that was carried out by remote control from a ground base in China.

The Chinese astronauts have been living and working in the module for the past week as part of preparations for manning a permanent space station. They returned to the Shenzhou 9 capsule early Sunday and disconnected in preparation for the manual reconnection.

Wu Ping, spokeswoman for China's manned space program, told reporters in Beijing that hand levers were used to control Shenzhou 9 and position it to dock with the orbiting module. The maneuver was "precise and perfect" and the three astronauts carried it out "calmly and skillfully," Wu said.

"This success in manual docking represents a major breakthrough in our space rendezvous and docking technologies," Wu said.

China's next goals include another manned mission to the module later this year and replacing Tiangong 1, which was launched last year, with a permanent space station around 2020. Possible future missions could also include sending a man to the moon.

China's permanent space station is to weigh about 60 tons, slightly smaller than NASA's Skylab of the 1970s and about one-sixth the size of the 16-nation International Space Station.

The Shenzhou 9 crew includes 33-year-old Liu Yang, an air force pilot and China's first female space traveler. Liu is joined by mission commander and veteran astronaut Jing Haipeng, 45, and crew mate Liu Wang, 43.

Their mission, which is expected to last at least 10 days, is China's fourth manned mission. Shenzhou 9 launched June 16 from the Jiuquan center on the edge of the Gobi desert in northern China.

Wu said the astronauts will spend three to four more days in the module before returning to the capsule and manually separating from Tiangong 1. Once back in Shenzhou 9, they will return to Earth within a day, she said.

China is hoping to join the United States and Russia as the only countries to send independently maintained space stations into orbit. It is already one of just three nations to have launched manned spacecraft on their own.

Wu said China spent 20 billion yuan (US$3.1 billion) on its space program between 1992 and 2005. By the time the next Shenzhou mission is completed, Beijing will have spent an additional 19 billion yuan (US$3 billion), she said.

Tesla CEO sees EVs being as popular as gas-powered cars

FREMONT, Calif (Reuters) - Tesla Motors Inc Chief Executive Elon Musk, an entrepreneur known for his outsized ambition, on Friday made a stunning forecast: battery-powered cars will likely match the internal combustion engine in popularity by the middle of the next decade.

"In 20 years more than half of new cars manufactured will be fully electric," Musk said. "I feel actually quite safe in that bet. That's a bet I will put money on."

Musk, who divides his time between Tesla and his space exploration startup SpaceX, said it might even happen sooner than that.

"It's probably going to be in the 12- to 15-year time frame," he said, speaking at an event at Tesla's manufacturing plant in Fremont, where he handed over the keys to the first buyers of the new Model S sedan.

Electric vehicles have struggled to find an audience beyond Hollywood celebrities, Silicon Valley venture capitalists and policymakers in Washington, primarily due to their premium pricing and anxieties about their driving range.

Most analysts see pure electric cars accounting for only a single-digit percentage of total sales over the next decade, in part because of the cost of batteries and the uncertainty around continued government subsidies for the new technology.

Rival automaker Nissan Motor Co , the most bullish mass-market car maker, forecasts that by 2020 10 percent of all cars sold will be electric. In an interview with Reuters on Friday in Tokyo, Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn said he believed that forecast was attainable if enough automakers followed Nissan into offering EVs.

Musk, the inspiration for Robert Downey Jr's Tony Stark character in "Iron Man," has overcome odds and a turbulent time at the carmaker, marked by a near-debilitating financial crisis, to now deliver the second car in its portfolio. The company also sells the Roadster sports car.

In addition to Tesla, Musk founded SpaceX, which last month sent the first privately developed ship into space to dock with the International Space Station, and online payments site PayPal, now part of eBay .

Despite the slow adoption of electric vehicles, many automakers are planning to launch them to meet rising fuel efficiency standards.

Apart from General Motors' Volt and Nissan's all-electric Leaf, Toyota has begun selling a plug-in Prius, and EVs from Ford, Honda, BMW and Fiat will join the fray this year, along with cars from start-up Coda Automotive.

INVESTOR GETS CAR NO.1

Tesla, which has said it has adopted a slow, methodical approach to the launch, expects to deliver 5,000 Model S sedans by the end of 2012. Reservations for the sedan have topped 10,000.

The company expects to deliver over 20,000 vehicles next year, Musk said.

The owner of the first Model S to roll off the assembly is Steve Jurvetson, managing director of venture capital firm Draper Fisher Jurvetson, an early investor in Tesla. Musk gets the second Model S.

Tim Draper, founder and managing director of Draper Fisher Jurvetson, received his keys on Friday after having waited nearly three years for the car.

"It's the smoothest car I have ever driven," Draper said, who also likes its large touch navigation screen.

The Model S is the electric carmaker's most crucial launch yet as it represents the company's transition to the mass market.

Tesla has described 2012 as a "year with two halves" with the Model S launch as the dividing line. Ninety percent of the company's revenue this year is expected to come from the sedan.

Tesla also draws revenue from its partnerships with Toyota Motor Co's and Daimler AG . In February, Tesla announced an expanded deal with Daimler to create an electric powertrain for a new Mercedes Benz EV.

Musk said that while he was positive about Tesla's powertrain business, he added "10 CEOs determine whether we have a powertrain business or not."

Tesla was talking to a major carmaker about a "high volume" powertrain deal, Musk said, but did not give any details.

Tesla also makes the powertrain system for the electric Toyota RAV4. Toyota, which unveiled the model last month, said it projects to sell 2,600 of the sport-utility vehicle over the next three years in the United States.

The Model S base model will be priced at about $57,000, before a $7,500 U.S. federal tax credit, for a car that can travel 160 miles on a full charge.

More popular will be the Model S version that will be able to travel 230 miles on a full charge. That version will cost $10,000 more. A version of the Model S that will have a range of 300 miles will cost another $10,000.

Mariposa community developers in Rio Rancho leave homeowners with debt

Posted at: 06/22/2012 7:21 PM
By: Stuart Dyson, KOB Eyewitness News 4

It's hard times this summer for a high-dollar housing development, with the developer planning to walk away, leaving homeowners with a big bill to pay.

The Mariposa community, on the north end of Rio Rancho, is in danger of being left high and dry on the shifting sands of the desert where it was constructed.

The sands started shifting in the recession when sales slowed down and Mariposa couldn't make payments on a water and sewer system and other improvements included in a special bond issue.

The developer, High Desert Investments, a subsidiary of Albuquerque Academy, decided to pull out of the deal.

This leaft about 100 homeowners with a $16 million debt to pay in the form of higher taxes.

"It can go up as much as $15,000, $20,000 a year," said homeowner John Knipps. "So how can anybody afford that?"

Many of those homeowners packed into Rio Rancho City Hall for a meeting Friday - a meeting where High Desert was a no-show.

"They're real estate scoundrels, leaving 100 people about to go homeless," said Mariposa homeowner Avery Meizner."I just want to know why weren't they here today? Why did they cancel the last meeting?"

"This whole thing has brought the community together in a way I've never seen," said Zach Bryan, the first homeowner to move into Mariposa. "We've become tight as a community to fight this. We will not go down without a fight."

One option that Rio Rancho city leaders say is not on the table is an over-all tax increase to pay the bills for Mariposa.

They will be busy over the next few days, meeting with their legal team to try to resolve the crisis without bankrupting Mariposa homeowners, and without increasing the tax burden on Rio Rancho taxpayers.

Defense rebuts insanity claim in Breivik trial

(AP Photo/Berit Roald/Scanpix NTB POOL)

(AP) ? On the last day of his trial, Anders Behring Breivik's defense lawyers on Friday tried to cast the confessed mass killer as a political militant motivated by an extreme right-wing ideology rather than a delusional madman who killed 77 people for the sake of killing.

Since Breivik has admitted to the bomb-and-gun attacks on July 22, the self-styled anti-Muslim militant's mental state has been the key focus of the trial.

In his closing arguments, defense lawyer Geir Lippestad reiterated that Breivik accepts that he set off a bomb outside a government high-rise and then gunned down dozens of teenagers at a Labor Party youth camp in the way that the attacks were described in court.

"That little, safe Norway would be hit by such a terror attack is almost impossible to understand," Lippestad said. And that helps explain why psychiatric experts reached different conclusions about Breivik's mental state, he added

Lippestad used his closing arguments to try to prove to the court that Breivik's claims of being a resistance fighter in a struggle to protect Norway and Europe from being colonized by Muslims are not delusional, but part of a political view shared by other right-wing extremists.

He also refuted assertions by one team of psychiatrists that the driving force behind Breivik's attacks was a psychotic impulse to kill, rather than a political ideology.

"July 22 was an inferno of violence," Lippestad said. "But we must also look at how he carried out the attacks to see whether it was violence in itself or radical politics that was the cause."

The five-judge panel is expected to make a ruling in July or August. If deemed mentally competent, Breivik would likely be given Norway's maximum prison term of 21 years. A sentence can be extended beyond that if a prisoner is considered a menace to society. If declared insane, he would be committed to a mental institution for as long as he's considered sick and dangerous to others. Prosecutors suggested Thursday that could mean he would be held for the rest of his life.

Karen Klein, Bullied School Bus Monitor, Receives $140,000 in Donations, Feels Sorry For Kids

Students on Greece, N.Y., school bus No. 784 tormented Karen Klein to the point of tears this week, calling her awful names and spewing hateful comments.

Amazingly, the 10-minute verbal attack was caught on video and has since gone viral, with support pouring in for the 69-year-old bullied school bus monitor.

Support to the tune of $140,000. That's not a typo.

It took "a lot of will power" to not fight back, the Greece Central School District employee told NBC's Today this morning. "I'm not usually that calm."

The unidentified middle school students under investigation; any disciplinary action will have to wait until September when school is in session.

Their torment of a widow and grandmother of eight whose son committed suicide is upsetting to say the least, but there is a silver lining to be found.

An online fundraising effort to send Klein on "a vacation of a lifetime" has long surpassed its $5,000 goal, with more than $140,000 (and counting) raised.

"I'm so amazed," she said. "I've gotten the nicest letters, emails, Facebook messages. It's like, wow – there's a whole world out there I didn't know."

Klein, who is semi-retired and worked as a bus driver for 20 years and as a bus monitor for the past three, said she doesn't want the kids to be punished.

Instead, she hopes the parents simply watch the video you see above.

"I'm sorry that your sons acted the way they did," she responded when asked what she would say to their parents. "I'm sure they don't act that way at home, but you never know what they're going to do when they're out of the house."

Most of the 1.5 million people who watched this online wouldn't be so even-handed.

You can find the bullying kids' names quite easily if you look around - we have not posted them here - and local police say they fear serious retaliation.

Tell me. How do you think this will effect charities?

Certainly you don?t believe the rich will give 100% of what they currently do when that deduction is scrapped, do you?
3% of the population? OK, but how much of that 3% of the population is composed of the same sort of people that this measure is aimed at? My guess is 20% or 30% of that top 2% will give less.
Most of you libs aren?t discussing this honestly. Just attacking Cons.

It will suck charitable donations out of the equation. The government will have to fund all the needy people with our tax dollars. I am just curious at what point are we going to be taxed enough? We have already seen that the government can not be trusted with our tax money, yet the left want us to give them more. The so called rich already pay 37% in taxes, when is it going to be enough? They take their companies overseas to avoid too much government theft yet Obama thinks that taxing the rich more will create jobs? He is a marxist fool.

Hulk smash? Maybe not anymore: Scientists block excess aggression in mice

ScienceDaily (June 19, 2012) ? Pathological rage can be blocked in mice, researchers have found, suggesting potential new treatments for severe aggression, a widespread trait characterized by sudden violence, explosive outbursts and hostile overreactions to stress.

In a study appearing June 19 in The Journal of Neuroscience, researchers from USC and Italy identify a critical neurological factor in aggression: a brain receptor that malfunctions in overly hostile mice. When the researchers shut down the brain receptor, which also exists in humans, the excess aggression disappeared.

The findings are a significant breakthrough in developing drug targets for pathological aggression, a component in Alzheimer's disease, autism, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, among other common psychological disorders.

"From a clinical and social point of view, reactive aggression is absolutely a major problem," said Marco Bortolato, lead author of the study and research assistant professor of pharmacology and pharmaceutical sciences at the USC School of Pharmacy. "We want to find the tools that might reduce impulsive violence."

A large body of independent research, including past work by Bortolato and senior author Jean Shih, USC University Professor and Boyd & Elsie Welin Professor in Pharmacology and Pharmaceutical Sciences at USC, has identified a specific genetic predisposition to pathological aggression: low levels of the enzyme monoamine oxidase A (MAO A). Both male humans and mice with congenital deficiency of the enzyme respond violently in response to stress.

"The same type of mutation that we study in mice is associated with criminal, very violent behavior in humans," Bortolato said. "But we really didn't understand why that it is."

Bortolato and Shih worked backwards to replicate elements of human pathological aggression in mice, including not just low enzyme levels but also the interaction of genetics with early stressful events, such as trauma and neglect during childhood.

"Low levels of MAO A are one basis of the predisposition to aggression in humans. The other is an encounter with maltreatment, and the combination of the two factors appears to be deadly: It results consistently in violence in adults," Bortolato said.

The researchers showed that in excessively aggressive rodents that lack MAO A, high levels of electrical stimulus are required to activate a specific brain receptor in the pre-frontal cortex. Even when this brain receptor does work, it stays active only for a short period of time.

"The fact that blocking this receptor moderates aggression is why this discovery has so much potential. It may have important applications in therapy," Bortolato said. "Whatever the ways environment can persistently affect behavior -- and even personality over the long term -- behavior is ultimately supported by biological mechanisms."

Importantly, the aggression receptor, known as NMDA, is also thought to play a key role in helping us make sense of multiple, coinciding streams of sensory information, according to Bortolato.

The researchers are now studying the potential side effects of drugs that reduce the activity of this receptor.

"Aggressive behaviors have a profound socioeconomic impact, yet current strategies to reduce these staggering behaviors are extremely unsatisfactory," Bortolato said. "Our challenge now is to understand what pharmacological tools and what therapeutic regimens should be administered to stabilize the deficits of this receptor. If we can manage that, this could truly be an important finding."

Sean Godar, a postdoctoral scientist in the Department of Pharmacology and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the School of Pharmacy, was co-lead author of the study. Kevin Chen, a research associate professor at the School of Pharmacy, was a co-author.

The research was funded by the National Institute of Mental Health of the National Institutes of Health under grant R01MH39085, the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development of the National Institutes of Health under grant R21HD070611, the Boyd and Elsie Welin Professorship help by Shih and a USC Zumberge Research Individual Grant to Bortolato.
