HTC One Max for Chinese market pictured

Chinese HTC One Max

A bigger screen and faster processor set the one Max apart from the current HTC One models

A Chinese variant of the HTC One Max has been spotted by the folks at ePrice. Looking very much like the HTC One the world already knows, the Max (also known as the T6) does have some key differences. Besides the removable back cover, dual-SIM variation, and SD card support we would expect in an Asian version, the processor and screen have both received a major bump compared to the current model. The HTC One Max is said to have a Snapdragon 800 running at 2.3GHz, and carry a 5.9-inch screen.

We're not sure how closely this will resemble any models that may be released in the west, but we know a lot of folks are interested in what HTC is doing with the bigger One. There's another picture after the break, and some pricing and availability speculation (spoiler: Asia) at the source link.

Fox sitcom 'Dads' blasted weeks before its debut

(AP) ? It doesn't debut until next month, but the Fox sitcom "Dads" is already taking heat in early reviews for being crass, sexist and exploiting racial stereotypes.

Facing reporters Thursday, its stars and producers defended the show as focusing on human frailties for the sake of laughs and enlightenment. They vowed to refine it, as needed, as the season unfolds, and asked its audience not to rush to judgment.

"In the pilot (episode) we all noticed some things we'd like to change or tweak moving forward," co-creator Alec Sulkin said at the session of the Television Critics Association. He acknowledged they may have "missed the mark a few times" in the pilot.

"The first six episodes, you're improving your pilot," said Mike Scully, another executive producer whose credits include the once-excoriated "The Simpsons."

"I think you're going to notice a change in the tone and balance," Scully said.

Yet another executive producer of the series is Seth MacFarlane, who wasn't present at the session. His animated comedies, including "Family Guy," have won him popularity as well as criticism for their rawness.

"Dads" centers on two friends, played by Seth Green and Giovanni Ribisi, whose politically incorrect fathers re-enter their lives and disrupt them. The raucous, loose-lipped dads are played by Martin Mull and Peter Riegert.

"Historically, television has been a provocative medium. It's a medium we look at to observe ourselves," said Green, before noting that the show has "some disparaging portraits of white men."

"Dads" premieres Sept. 17.

Feds, states want Apple to revamp e-book practices

(AP) ? The Justice Department and 33 state attorneys general on Friday said they want to force Apple to sign contracts with publishers that don't prevent Apple or other e-book stores from competing on price.

A federal judge ruled last month that Apple Inc. colluded with publishers to raise e-book prices. The Cupertino, Calif., company has denied wrongdoing and has said it will appeal the decision.

The Justice Department and the attorneys general told the court Friday that they want Apple to tear up its contracts with five e-book publishers and sign new ones that aren't likely to increase prices. In addition, they want Apple to allow rival e-book sellers like Amazon.com Inc. and Barnes & Noble Inc. to provide links inside their iPhone and iPad apps to their own book stores.

Apple allows Amazon and Barnes & Noble's apps to load books that have already been purchased, but doesn't allow the apps to sell books or link to online bookstores.

Apple did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.

The book publishers previously settled the price-fixing charges. They are Hachette, HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, Holtzbrinck Publishers, doing business as Macmillan, and The Penguin Publishing Co. Ltd., doing business as Penguin Group. The settlements were designed to encourage price competition and discounting, but that hasn't happened.

The government alleged that the publishers colluded with Apple to move the e-book industry away from the wholesale model employed by Amazon, which had unnerved publishers by selling e-book versions of popular hardcover titles for $9.99 before the April 2010 release of Apple's iPad. Under its contracts with publishers, Amazon was free to sell books at any price it wanted. Apple instead adopted the "agency" model, under which publishers set the retail price and the store takes a cut. Under that model, the store can't discount a book.

In her ruling, the judge said the conspiracy harmed consumers in numerous ways. Some had to pay more for e-books, she said. Others bought a cheaper e-book rather than the one they preferred to purchase and others deferred a purchase altogether rather than pay the higher price.

The settlements with the publishers removed the shackles that prevented Amazon from discounting, but the $9.99 price for e-books that publishers dreaded has become increasingly rare.

Guest Post: China?s Housing - Living In A Bubble

Rising home prices, especially in major cities, are prompting a growing chorus of discontent among ordinary Chinese. My Japanese friends would no doubt feel more than hint of nostalgia should they visit Beijing. For just like the famous Japanese ?bubble economy? of the late 1980s, Beijing has been virtually turned into one big construction site with constantly changing streetscapes.

Certainly, China?s housing market has been amazingly bullish for many years. Official figures for Beijing homes put the average price at $3,800 per square meter, up from around $500 per square meter in 1989 (incidentally, the peak of the Japanese real estate froth).

But don?t try telling Chinese real estate developers it?s a bubble. In their eyes, the local real estate market is no such thing. Prices will only continue to rise, they argue.

Ren Zhiqiang and Pan Shiyi are general managers of two well-known real estate companies. They successfully "predicted" the housing bull market, making them opinion leaders on Sina Weibo (China's Twitter), where they each boast about 15 million fans. While young people in other countries might admire Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, or other famous entrepreneurs, Chinese netizens are starry eyed about two real estate developers. It is as good an indication as any of the tremendous influence that real estate has on Chinese society.

For their part, Ren and Pan have been harshly critical each time the Chinese government unveils measures in yet another bid to control the runaway market. And indeed, the government has not been hesitant about expressing its concerns, former Premier Wen Jiabao noting publicly that real estate prices were unreasonable, and tighter regulations were needed.

In 2006, a friend of mine bought a house in central Beijing. He paid about 10,000 yuan per square meter. Six years later, the price had risen to 60,000 yuan per square meter. That, of course, far outstrips any increase in the average wage over the same period. No wonder, then, that Chinese like to joke, ?When it comes to house prices, the premier has no say, as it depends on the general managers."

For young Chinese owning your home is part of the ?Chinese Dream.? The traditional view is that the house you live in ought to be your own. If you rent a house ? no matter how lovely it is ? it still belongs to someone else. In particular, goes the thinking, young couples planning to wed really should be having a new home. That explains the success a couple of years ago of the movie Dwelling, which has a plot based on that very same viewpoint.

It is this tradition that has always made rising home prices a social issue in China. Combine that with corruption, the increasingly tough time new graduates are having getting employment, forced relocations, and other issues, and the Chinese government unsurprisingly recognizes the political sensitivity of real estate.

A former railway minister, who lost his job over corruption, was found to be in the possession of no fewer than 374 houses. He?s not alone. Other officials have been found to own dozens or even hundreds of houses, not for sale or for rent, but for potential capital gains. That of course doesn?t sit well with ordinary Chinese who struggle to afford even one home. The explosiveness of stories of real estate corruption is a major reason why the Chinese government seeks to control real estate prices.

In China?s smaller cities, real estate price increases have been relatively mild. Consequently, residents are permitted to acquire multiple homes, assuming they have the money. Conditions are much stricter in Beijing, Shanghai, and other major cities with runaway housing prices. In these markets, the Chinese government has restricted home buying, as a key measure for controlling prices. In Beijing, for instance, you can buy your principal place of residence; buying a second home becomes much more difficult. In Guangzhou, you can buy a second home, but at a much higher lending rate.

This registered permanent residence is an important link for Chinese and their city. If you have no permanent residence but you want to buy a house, you must submit a local work certificate and a social insurance enrollment certificate for five years in a row, otherwise you're out of luck.

The government likes to think that these purchase restrictions are effective at controlling home prices, but what ordinary Chinese want is greater transparency. It is for instance almost impossible to get information on house purchases from the Internet, which means that nobody knows which officials own multiple properties. The suspicion is that the government dare not offer this kind of transparency, because it would reveal legions of civil servants with more than the allowed number of properties in their possession.

But although ordinary Chinese complain constantly about rising home prices, don?t expect them to take to the streets in protest, like some of their overseas counterparts. Ask young people why they don?t protest, and you?ll often hear the answer: ?What is the point of taking to the streets? you could just end up even worse off."

In the major cities, most young people are forced to use money from their parents to make a down payment on a mortgage loan, and then work hard and live frugally to repay the loan. The down payment is usually 30% of the total price, and the monthly installment payment usually represents 30-40% of their wages. It is quite common in China for this commitment to almost entirely take over one?s life. Most people resign themselves to their fates, criticize the government on the Internet, save a few harsh words for the likes of Ren Zhiqiang and Pan Shiyi, and then leave it at that. Still, each report of higher prices chips away at the government's credibility.

The real estate industry may have played a role in China?s economic development, but it appears to have been for the benefit of the few at the expense of the many. In the long term, the trade-off seems poor. For that, not just the general manager, but the premier too needs to take responsibility.

John Boehner Needs to Do More Than Stand In Front of a Wall with a Hashtag for Jobs

john boehner

On Wednesday, Speaker Boehner (R-OH) accused President Obama of threatening to shut down the government. Yes, the Speaker said today at his presser, ?Instead of working together, the president yesterday threatened to shut down the government and recycled some of his old partisan proposals.?

Watch here and try not to laugh thinking about just who is recycling 40 votes to repeal ObamaCare (their own idea):

?Under the president?s leadership our economy continues to struggle with slow economic growth, high unemployment, stagnant wages. And frankly, I think we can do much better.

?Instead of working together, the president yesterday threatened to shut down the government and recycled some of his old partisan proposals. His scheme yesterday would actually require small businesses to pay higher tax rates than big companies. Now the only thing that?s new here is that he wants to take some of that revenue and use it for more of his ?stimulus? spending.

?Listen, Republicans are acting on economic growth & job creation. This week, we?ll work on a permanent, market-based rate for student loans. It?s very similar to a bill that we moved here in May. I want to congratulate the Senate for finally getting this bill over to us. We?ll pass bills to stop government abuse. And we?re going to continue to work on real tax reform, both on the personal side and the corporate side, not just to help big companies.

?We?re not just over here making noise, the House Republicans are continuing to take action.?

Boehner is still pretending the Keystone Pipeline (from which he stands to benefit financially) is a JOBS BILL. The Speaker seems to believe that if he stands in front of a press wall with the hashtag #4jobs, people won?t know any better. That explains why he claimed that Republicans aren?t just talking about jobs, they?re taking action.

Boehner?s pressers have become highly uncomfortable to watch as he tries to avoid falling headfirst into the tea quicksand of fail.

The House didn?t manage to do much else other than 40 fake show votes to repeal ObamaCare (aka, free campaign ads for Republicans) during this year?s session. They even failed to live up to their own budget. To avoid discussing these realities, Speaker Boehner has taken to pretending like he?s not in charge.

As cover, Boehner never appears without a prop that has the word JOBS on it, even though his House has not actually tried to do one thing about jobs except block President Obama?s jobs bills. The propaganda efforts are getting desperate for this one; Speaker Boehner #4Jobs is as fictional as the scandals his House invents.

As House Republicans exit stage Right for their ?recess?, Americans are wondering where are the jobs, why is sequestration still in place, why can?t Republicans even sit down at the table for budget reconciliation, why did they only manage to pass 4 appropriations bills out of 12, and most of all, why are they even coming back?

Republicans are coming back so that they can hold our economy hostage in order to take healthcare away from the rest of America. They got theirs. What?s your problem? #4Jobs!

Mayor Eric Garcetti backs new ride-share apps, taxi modernization

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti has endorsed a move by state regulators to consider permitting new app-driven ride-sharing services, and also will work with city taxi companies to modernize their operations.

Garcetti said he supported an action Tuesday by state officials that could allow customers to summon a ride using a smartphone, if the businesses comply with safety rules.

"This decision allows new, cost-effective solutions while protecting public safety through common-sense regulations," Garcetti said in a statement. "I also look forward to working closely with L.A.'s taxi companies to revisit our existing franchise agreements to adopt similar innovations."

The proposal follows an outcry from L.A.'s 2,300 traditional taxis. The city's taxi companies claim the growing, app-based ride services have had an unfair business advantage because they operate outside the city's inspection and regulatory process.

Use of the apps, often marketed as a cheaper, more casual alternative to taxis, is expanding rapidly in Los Angeles, even as city regulators say the services are illegal.

Under this week's California Public Utilities Commission proposal, a new category of businesses would be created, called "transportation network companies." The agency, which regulates cars for hire, would issue licenses to the services. The policy could be approved as early as Sept. 5.

Los Angeles' taxicab administrator, Thomas Drischler, sent ride-share companies cease-and-desist letters in June. The letters, sent to San Francisco-based companies Lyft, Sidecar and Uber, warned the companies that if they did not stop operating as "high-tech bandit cabs," drivers could be arrested on misdemeanor offenses and cars could be impounded.?

The app companies said at the time that they did not plan to stop operating in Los Angeles. All three said they conducted background checks on their drivers and bought insurance policies.

The clash between city regulators and the ride-share firms is part of a larger debate over how to classify start-ups whose business models don't fit neatly under existing laws. Other major cities, including New York, Boston and Washington, have taken similar actions against one or all of the companies.

A Low Roller Guide to Poker in London - (PTP News Feed)

A Low Roller Guide to Poker in London

This series will bring you paired guides to the world?s true poker capitals, a high roller and low roller guide, providing the full spread of low-downs on how to ball it poker-style, be it high or lowball. We?ll start the series with a low roller guide to London.

LONDON LOW ROLLER GUIDE

London, freaking expensive European capital of stinking wealth. You really have to watch your wallet here if you?re not rolling in cash ?cause this city will eat your money without pausing for breath. It?s a beautiful, rich, dirty capital of capital and it?s up to you to survive in it and enjoy it. Even the locals complain about the prices, in a city where cheap drinks will cost you twice what they do an hour?s ride out of town. It gets away with it all by being a hell of a lot of fun.

The games

A great selection of games exist for the small to midstakes player. Cash games a-plenty can be found from ?1 ? ?1 at?The Vic?, the Victoria Grosvenor Casino. The Empire in Leicester Square, reputedly host to the softest cash games in the capital, also runs cash games through the night starting at ?1 ? ?2 with a ?50 minimum.

Many casinos and poker rooms exist across London, and sites such as The London Poker Guide can be of help in sifting through your options, or indeed in picking a tournament to take part in last minute.

I say last minute, while in fact you must be careful in London to pre-register with ID at many poker venues some time before attending, often 24 hours before. Just phone up before fixing your plans, to find out whether a particular casino or poker room requires this.

If you fancy trying to satellite into a live event running in the capital, London is host to its own leg of the EPT, to the GUKPT, the WPT and the UKIPT (United Kingdom and Ireland Poker Tour) Grand Final each year.

To eat

There are some amazing options in London that won?t kill your roll. I?ll give you the lowdown on a few of them here.

If you?re after cuisine with a kick, and want something authentic, try Mestizo for a great Mexican experience. Just a little north of the centre, three minutes walk from the nearest underground station and it?s the real deal.

Dishoom will provide you with some premium Indian cuisine in the heart of central London, Covent Garden. As spicy as its Mexican counterpart but from the other side of the world, both these cuisines are immensely popular across the UK.

Forget those chain fast food outlets, Patty and Bun in Bond Street is where it?s at for burgers in London. You?ll mind the queues less once you bite into one.

If you?re on a serious budget, you can move it a big notch down and focus on the food for a fiver approach. Some pubs offer very decent offers on certain days of the week, and Chinatown, right next to Leicester Square, is beautifully cheap and full of buffets (some of which are all you can eat!).

Talking of budget food, be sure to try out some of the numerous all day breakfasts available in London on literally every corner. Some are divine, some hideous. It all depends on the quality of meat used, and other ingredients.

In case you?re unfamiliar, the standard fare in a full English breakfast includes sausages, bacon, mushrooms, beans, toast, tomatoes and frequently chips, black pudding (basically dried blood ? avoid if not hugely carnivorous!) and hash browns. You won?t need lunch after one of these!

Going out

If clubbing?s your thing, you?re going to like London. One club which gets a lot of press in London is Fabric, a large venue running three rooms of beats throughout the night. Trips to Fabric tend to be marathon affairs so be prepared for an all-nighter.

The Ministry of Sound, a legendary institution, also runs its own club in London. You can get a taste of this club without even attending, as they run a ?live from the club? radio on the website.

Shamelessly stealing its name from an enlightened being, funkybuddha is a very hip venue doing well in central London and worth a look.

If you?d rather navigate your own way through the capital, TimeOut London, probably the most popular information hub on the capital, can provide excellent guidance.

To stay

For some serious value for money, check out some of these options.

With a very central location, great ratings and rooms from ?50 a night, the Ridgemount hotel is a fine option. Her Majesty Hotel prides itself on providing top notch accommodation, in particular to business travellers, and is priced in the same range.

For something a little extravagant without the price tag, lastminute.com offers an interesting service. They will provide you with a room in a five star hotel, but the hotel itself and location (within London) will remain a mystery until the day of your check in. Known as the ?secret hotel? service, this proves a real winner with those who don?t mind too much about which part of the city they bed down in, and you pay amazingly low rates for five star accommodation.

To relax

I?m not talking about sight-seeing. Sight-seeing is not relaxing, whether it?s crammed into a tour bus or rushing around the bridges of central London with a million other malcontents. I?m talking about peace, however contradictory that might sound in London.

?**** Take a walk in one of the massive parks of the capital, totally free of charge. I recommend Hyde Park, Regent?s Park and Green Park as fine options.

?**** If you want to go further into nature in the city, take a visit to Kew Royal Botanical Gardens. Host to thousands of species of plant, this is really a very special place. It?s not free, but it?s well worth the entry fee of ?14.50.

?**** Go relax in one of London?s many spas.

Bellator on Wednesday puts wrestling center-stage

In September, the International Olympic Committee will decide if wrestling should remain one of the sports that are a part of the 2020 Olympics. The sport was left off a list of core sports in February, and is competing against squash and softball/baseball for the final spot. Considering wrestling's importance to MMA, the two sports' leaders have teamed up to save the sport's Olympic spot.

It started with the UFC teaming up with the Committee to Preserve Wrestling. Now, Bellator is airing this PSA during Wednesday night's card which is filled with wrestlers.

Two-time NCAA Division I champion Ben Askren wrestled for the U.S. for the 2008 Olympics, and will fight Andrey Koreshkov. Mo Lawal was on the U.S. world team in 2005 and was a Division I All-American. He has a fight with Jacob Noe in the Bellator light heavyweight tournament. The card is headlined by Michael Chandler's championship fight with David Rickels. Chandler was an All-American at Missouri.

Social Tables Seating Arrangement Software Lands $1.6M Equity Round Led By Militello Capital

Screen Shot 2013-07-29 at 9.14.41 PMFor every event space, there is a poor soul (or two) who work tirelessly to create seating arrangements and diagrams for each and every event that comes through that space. This ranges from hotels to conference centers and everything in between. But Social Tables has been trying to change that, with software that lets any event space create 2D and 3D diagrams and models of any layout or seating arrangement on the fly. According to founder and CEO Dan Berger, companies not only use SocialTables to create diagrams but to sell the space to potential clients by creating quick and easy diagrams.
