Structured settlements provide long term income to families or individuals who have law suits pending due to injury or illness. Instead of going to court and following through with a long, tiring court case, the victims and the parties at fault agree to a settlement amount, and the lawsuit will be dismissed. The settlement will provide security in a time of financial desperation. When these settlements are awarded it brings monetary relief and security to the injured parties. One of the main purposes of structured settlements is to provide a stable, continuing income to someone who may not be able to work, making it possible for them to meet their financial commitments for many years to come. Depending on each particular case these payments are designed to last up to twenty or thirty years. Accident survivors have tremendous needs both medically, and financially. To survive through the aftermath of an accident there has to be enough money to pay the bills, buy food, and sustain the victims throughout the process of their recovery. Sometimes this recovery may take weeks, or recovery may take a lifetime. Sprint's LTE build out already underway, new 4G network to launch first half 2012?

At this point, it's pretty much an open secret that Sprint needs to hitch its ride to LTE to stay in the wireless game. CNET caught wind of the operator's intended 4G plans ahead of its scheduled October strategy announcement -- an event at which many in the industry expect Sprint to lay out its LTE cards. According to the report, the Hesse-led network's been hard at work installing the necessary infrastructure to convert to its towers to FD-LTE, which is the same flavor of LTE as Verizon and future partner LightSquared. Using the iDEN spectrum it acquired from its Nextel purchase, Sprint reportedly plans to set up 4G shop on those radio waves, and make use of current WiMAX provider Clearwire's proposed switch to TD-LTE by incorporating chipsets in future phones that accommodate both frequencies. The network changeover, rumored to cost Sprint somewhere in the range of $4 - $5 billion, should get carried out over the next five years, laying the groundwork for a true three-way 4G race.

Charlie Sheen settles lawsuit over "Men" firing (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Charlie Sheen has settled a lawsuit with the makers and creators of "Two and A Half Men" over the actor's dismissal from the top-rated U.S. television comedy earlier this year, Warner Bros. said on Monday.

Sheen had filed a $100 million lawsuit against the studio behind the CBS comedy and its creator Chuck Lorre after he was fired from the show in March.

Warner Bros. did not put a figure on the settlement. The case had been settled through arbitration.

"Warner Bros. Television, Chuck Lorre and Charlie Sheen have resolved their dispute to the parties' mutual satisfaction. The pending lawsuit and arbitration will be dismissed as to all parties. The parties have agreed to maintain confidentiality over the terms of the settlement," Warner Bros said in a statement.

Sheen, the highest-paid actor on U.S. television, was fired from "Two and A Half Men" after publicly insulting Lorre in a series of bizarre interviews. His remarks followed a series of trips to rehab that had forced production on the TV comedy to be suspended in early 2011.

Monday's settlement announcement followed months of acrimonious exchanges, tempered by contrite appearances by Sheen on TV talk shows and at The Emmys in the last two weeks.

Sheen was replaced on "Two and A Half Men" by Ashton Kutcher. The new season debuted last week to a record 28.7 million U.S. viewers -- a bigger audience than any episodes in the comedy's first eight seasons with Sheen in the starring role as a womanizing bachelor.

Listen as you cruise the streets of L.A., and you'll hear the rhythms of Ozomatli, a band named for the monkey in the ritual Aztec calendar. It's the music of the multi-ethnic City of Angels with its rising Latino population and its polyphonic mix of rock, hip-hop, funk, cumbia and Chicano low-rider R&B. Ozomatli likes to create a street party atmosphere, but it's always been a band with a social conscience, too, whether it's defending immigrant rights or expressing tolerance and acceptance in the new song "Gay Vatos in Love." Lately, band members have become global ambassadors, roaming the world on State Department tours. As they tell "Sound Tracks" reporter Mirissa Neff, they started out as representatives of the new L.A. but feel like they've become "citizens of the world."

Live from the Fillmore, San Francisco's legendary concert hall, Ozomatli breaks into a rambunctious version of "La Gallina" (the chicken). With lead vocals by Raul Pacheco and some blistering horns -- Asdru Sierra on trumpet and Ulises Bella on saxophone -- it's irresistible dance music.

What's it all mean? Well, there's a rooster and a heist and a chase. And a current of slapstick comedy. It's feel-good music, that's for sure, with a free-spirited chorus, loosely translated as, "With Ozomatli, you can do anything/Make yourself fly."

This is a glimpse of Ozomatli rehearsing a performance piece called "At the Edge of Urban Identity." It's a kind of history of the band, a ballad of Ozomatli, narrated by friend Josh Kun, whom they call "our resident smart guy," maybe because when he's not fronting Ozomatli he teaches music journalism at USC in downtown L.A.

This excerpt opens the performance with Josh explaining the origins of Ozomatli's name and presenting the band's vision of our times: "There will be pain but there will be music to ease it; injustice will be survived by protest." This "new gospel of the monkey" ends with a funky riot of music, "If there's gonna be a revolution, let it begin on a Saturday night."

Ozomatli is celebrating its 15th anniversary as a band, what members jokingly refer to as their "Quinceanera," the coming of age party for Latinas. "It's the longest relationship any of us has ever been in," says founding member Ulises Bella. "Kind of sad, huh?"

These guys are old friends, and it's obvious they're still having fun with their hard-charging, polyglot band. Mirissa Neff caught up with them at a rehearsal on tour in San Francisco, where Wil-Dog Abers and Jiro Yamaguchi joined Uli in describing how strange it was to get a call from the Bush-era State Dept., how their lead vocalist almost died on stage in Madagascar, and why they wanted to include "Gay Vatos in Love" on their new album "Fire Away."

"Velociraptor!," the fourth offering from British rockers Kasabian, is destined to become a modern classic.

Recorded in their hometown of Leicester and mixed in San Francisco, "Velociraptor!" is written and produced by Kasabian's Sergio Pizzorno. The 11-track album is bursting at the seams with full-on anthemic indie rock that this British four-piece is known for. My story begins as a simple girl from Minnesota born to a probation officer mom and an industrial designer dad. My dad sat, day-after-day, in a musty basement drawing. He was creatively content, but fiscally frozen. He designed lawn trimmers, a floating calf feeder, a swivel chair and a plastic device you could put on a motorboat so your beer didn?t spill. That last idea might give you some insight into my ?happy pappy.? With over thirty patents, he died without a dime. So why do some people make it and others don?t?

I signed onto Facebook recently and a woman I know wrote, ?this entrepreneurial stuff ain?t for the faint-hearted.?

Posts of encouragement quickly filled the screen. A couple of phone calls later, two other entrepreneurial friends are on the upswing. A winemaker obsessed with Pinots bubbled over with excitement. And a handbag designer shared that this week she filled her own pocketbook. Both graciously offered to help ? and one even joked, ?I?ll take care of you until you get your stride.? Helping others?that must be one ingredient to success.

Another ingredient will be learning to collaborate with new partners. Based on Myers Briggs, I?m an ?ENFP? and am defined as warmly enthusiastic and imaginative. I see life as full of possibilities. I?m spontaneous and flexible and rely on my ability to improvise and use my verbal fluency. Yep, that?s me. A therapist of mine suggested that we pick romantic partners who compliment our weaknesses; I?m guessing it works for business partners too. So future partners, I hope you can handle the financials and the excel charts.

Other successful friends tell me the recipe for success is focus and follow-up. I?m usually good with focus, but admit if Ben & Jerry?s is in my house, I can?t accomplish anything. I love spending the night with those two guys. If I?m procrastinating, there?s nothing like an oversized soup spoon loaded with ice cream filled with chocolate shaped fish, oozing caramel and marshmallow swirls. I could eat the whole pint and fall asleep into a food coma. Or, I could focus. Ugh, I may have to implement a no ice cream rule if I want to make it.

As I leave my kitchen table, I recall a conversation with a successful Bay-area business owner, ?What people don?t see is the seven years of failures that didn?t make it. I finally have an idea that works, but it didn?t happen overnight.? This is a common theme I keep hearing, ?don?t give up, work hard and success won?t happen overnight.?

So maybe there?s no recipe at all, and it?s more like a test kitchen. You try, and try and try again until you find something that works. Adapt the recipe. Learn from your mistakes. Keep what?s working and get rid of the rest.

"Kutcher's performance was good, nearly as poker-faced fine as Sheen's was ... Kutcher will probably prove just as skilled," wrote Entertainment Weekly's Ken Tucker.

TV Guide's Matt Roush said that judging by first impressions the revamped "Men" will "will survive both Charlies just fine for at least a little while longer."

The Los Angeles Times called the premiere "a promising beginning" adding that "Kutcher brings a softness to a series that could be brittle and sour, misanthropic and misogynistic, and temperamentally middle-aged."

Sheen had been the highest-paid actor on U.S. television before being fired in March after an insulting tirade against the show's creators and producers that followed months of partying and attempts at rehab.

Sheen and Warner Bros are said to be close to a settlement of the actor's $100 million lawsuit over his firing. Sheen has also made a number of contrite appearances in the past week, including delivering an awkward mea culpa at the Primetime Emmy Awards show on Sunday.

Feds: Full Tilt Poker site was Ponzi scheme (AP)

NEW YORK ? An Internet poker company that was blocked from operating in the U.S. in the spring as part of an online gambling crackdown was "not a legitimate poker company, but a global Ponzi scheme," federal prosecutors said Tuesday.

The popular Full Tilt Poker website illegally raided player accounts to fund operations and make lavish payments to its owners, Justice Department lawyers said in a revised civil lawsuit filed in New York.

Over four years, the company used $444 million in player money to pay board members, including well-known professional poker players Christopher Ferguson and Howard Lederer, investigators said.

The poker site had promised players that their accounts were protected and wouldn't be touched. But authorities say that, as of March, the company had only $60 million left in its bank accounts to cover the $390 million it owed to players. It routinely mingled player money with its own finances, and took cash from some customers to pay out winnings due to others, prosecutors said.

"Full Tilt was not a legitimate poker company, but a global Ponzi scheme," U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said in a statement. "Not only did the firm orchestrate a massive fraud against the U.S. banking system, as previously alleged, Full Tilt also cheated and abused its own players to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars."

A lawyer for the site, Barry Boss, was traveling Tuesday and not immediately available for comment. The Associated Press could not immediately locate Ferguson, Lederer or their representatives for comment.

Federal authorities initially sued Full Tilt Poker in April as part of a broad crackdown on the most popular online poker sites in the U.S. They also filed criminal charges against the company's two top executives, Nelson Burtnick and Raymond Bitar.

Those charges are pending, and the men are still being sought by authorities. Previously, they have issued statements through a publicist condemning the charges as unfounded.

Executives at two other sites, PokerStars and Absolute Poker, also face charges and civil suits seeking millions of dollars in gambling proceeds.

U.S. lawmakers made it a crime to accept money in connection with unlawful gambling in 2006, but some big card-playing sites continued to operate anyway, saying their off-shore status or methods of processing payments put them outside the law's reach.

Many of the companies did business by having gamblers deposit money in special online accounts. Those accounts were then used to pay losses and receive winnings.

In its revised lawsuit against Full Tilt, Justice Department lawyers said that even though the company had assured players that those accounts "are segregated and held separately from our operating accounts," they were actually drained regularly for other purposes, including paying the company's owners and board members.

Bitar got $41 million and Lederer got $42 million, the lawsuit said. Ferguson was supposed to get $87.5 million, although he may have only received $25 million of that amount so far, federal prosecutors claimed.

Egypt sets November 21 date for parliament vote: Arabiya TV (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? Egypt's election commission has set November 21 as the date for a vote for the lower house of parliament, the country's first poll since President Hosni Mubarak was ousted seven months ago, Al Arabiya Television said on Saturday.

It quoted the head of the election commission as saying voting for the upper house will take place two months later on January 22.

Election commission officials were not immediately available to comment on the report, and an army source said the date will be announced in the coming days.

The election will be the first free vote in decades for Egyptians after 30 years of autocratic rule by Mubarak.

The country's ruling military council has been under pressure to fix a precise date for the election it had promised to hold when it took over after Mubarak was forced to step down in February.

A member of the ruling council said in July the vote will be held in three stages to make it easier for monitors to oversee voting.

Political parties are due to meet members of the ruling military council on Sunday to discuss preparations for the elections.

Percy and Sperling first met when Sperling was assigned to the paper?s Chicago bureau and wrote a story, ?Mr. Percy Goes to Washington,? about Percy?s role advising President Dwight Eisenhower on trade issues.

Percy became nationally known before his political career when he was named president of Bell & Howell Company at age 29 and oversaw its rapid growth.

In an interview Monday, Sperling recalled that Percy ?made all kinds of news? at the lunch. At the time, Percy was ?one of the hottest prospects anywhere for president,? Sperling said, and ?made headlines talking about his aspirations to be president.?

Sperling?s newspaper colleagues found the event useful and suggested he hold more gatherings where reporters could talk to important public figures in a relaxed setting. "I didn't know what I had," Sperling said.

The next session was in June 1967 and featured Idaho Gov. Robert Smylie, then chairman of the Republican Governor?s Association. The Press Club did not have a room available for lunch, so the session with Smylie was a breakfast and reporters ended up liking that time slot better. Most of the Monitor-hosted gatherings since then ? more than 3,700 hundred of them ? have been breakfasts.

Percy was the guest at the fifth breakfast on May 17, 1967, and continued to be a frequent visitor through his years in the Senate, speaking at 14 gatherings in all. After Percy lost a reelection bid in 1984, he and Sperling stayed in touch, sharing in their Illinois roots, the Christian Science religion, and a keen interest in politics.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) ? Pitcher Phil Coke yelled through the victorious clubhouse looking for Jim Leyland.

His turn had arrived to douse Detroit's manager with beer and champagne.

"Where's the skipper?" Coke shouted amid the cigar smoke and showers.

Leyland had already tucked himself away in the quiet confines of his office, reflecting for a few minutes on all the milestones in the Tigers' run to the AL Central title while also preparing for the next step: lining everything up just right for what he hopes is a deep October run.

Newcomer Doug Fister pitched the Tigers to the division title on Friday night, beating the Oakland Athletics 3-1 to secure Detroit's first top finish in nearly a quarter-century.

"A bunch of 'em nailed me, and they should," Leyland said of being soaked. "I want them to spray me. What the hell?"

Fister (9-13) retired 17 straight during one stretch to win his third straight start and fifth consecutive decision, and Wilson Betemit hit a go-ahead triple off Trevor Cahill (11-14) in the sixth. Don Kelly had a solo homer in the seventh after an earlier RBI single.

"We were seven games behind the Cleveland Indians at one point and people weren't really talking about us at all," said Leyland, puffing his own celebratory stogie and fighting tears. "They deserved it. They worked hard. They stuck together. There are special moments you can't put a price tag on and you just enjoy them. I'm an emotional guy, we all know that."

Detroit is headed to the playoffs for the first time since winning the AL wild card in 2006 and losing to St. Louis in the World Series. The Tigers (88-63) had not finished on top since winning the AL East in 1987, three years after their last World Series championship.

"It's been pretty much magical this whole second half," Coke said. "We've gone out every day and handled our business. We're all hungry. We're all ready for this."

When Josh Willingham grounded out to third to end it, the victorious Tigers sprinted out of their dugout. Closer Jose Valverde pumped both arms, then turned as catcher Alex Avila jumped into his embrace.

Leyland stood some 10 feet from the pitcher's mound and waited for a hug from each of his players.

New faces and old, Detroit made all the right moves. This month alone there have been two sweeps of the White Sox, one of Minnesota and another at Cleveland.

"I have a very special satisfaction. A lot of people probably didn't think I'd be managing the Tigers next year," Leyland said. "We were fortunate, because we were the team this year that met the challenge. We were almost spotless."

In the last year, general manager Dave Dombrowski acquired three players from within the division to put his team in position for a sensational September.

Delmon Young came to Detroit in a three-player deal with the Twins on Aug. 15, veteran infielder Betemit from Kansas City for a pair of prospects in July and Jhonny Peralta at the trade deadline last year from Cleveland.

Then there's the reliable Fister, who improved to 6-1 since he joined the Tigers in a six-player trade with Seattle on July 30. He is 5-0 over his last six starts and has given Leyland another front-line starter behind AL Cy Young Award contender Justin Verlander.

Fister has allowed only four earned runs in his last 44 2-3 innings for an 0.81 ERA over that stretch. He was unfazed after giving up Willingham's career-best 27th homer leading off the second. David DeJesus followed with a single, and Fister retired the next 17 hitters in order before another single by DeJesus, who played in his 1,000th game.

Fister allowed three hits, struck out five and didn't walk a batter for the fifth time in nine starts for Detroit.

Valverde finished for his 44th save in as many chances this season and his franchise-record 45th in a row overall.

As the party turned the visiting clubhouse floor into a slip-and-slide of water and ice, Fister stood to the side and watched. What a difference being with Detroit.

The Tigers won for the 23rd time in 28 games dating to Aug. 19 and 25th time in the club's last 36 road games.

"This is very special to me," he said. "This is some fun stuff."

"I just want to party!" hollered pitcher Al Alburquerque as he walked into the plumes of smoke coming from all corners.

Same for Leyland.

The 66-year-old could light up a fresh cigar to celebrate a division title that looked like a longshot mere months ago. The sixth-year skipper sported fresh socks and undershorts a day after Detroit's winning streak was stopped at 12 games in a 6-1 loss in Thursday night's series opener.

He'll surely be changing clothes again after a bubbly celebration in the visiting clubhouse at the Coliseum.

These Tigers have been on such a roll there has been no need for scoreboard watching ? even if Leyland has been doing so since April. It's been quite a late-season surge, considering Detroit trailed the Indians by eight games and was four games under .500 on May 3.

On Friday, the offense eventually did enough to back Fister.

"We're just a very talented and resilient team," Avila said. "At that (early) point in the season, we knew we just had to keep playing our game and we'd get there."

Detroit missed chances in the fourth and fifth innings after the game was delayed for 16 minutes before the top of the fourth because of an outage to the stadium lights in the Coliseum.

This is the second straight year a visiting team has clinched the division in Oakland. AL champion Texas did it last season and visits next week.

"It's not something you want to do," manager Bob Melvin said. "We would have liked to have won that game in the ninth inning. If you can have them win it in a different fashion, whether it's going in the clubhouse after we beat them and somebody else losing, that's how you'd like to do it."

WASHINGTON?? In science fiction, amber preserved the DNA that allowed rebirth of dinosaurs in Jurassic Park. In real life, amber preserved feathers that provide a new image of what dinosaurs looked like.

"Now, instead of scaly animals portrayed as usually drab creatures, we have solid evidence for a fluffy colored past," reports Mark A. Norell of the American Museum of Natural History in New York.

Examples of ancient feathers ranging from the simple to the complex are now being studied. They were preserved in amber found in western Canada, researchers led by Ryan C. McKellar of the University of Alberta report in Friday's edition of the journal Science.

Amber, hardened tree resin, preserved a mixture of feathers from 70 million years ago. Other feathers contained in amber dating to 90 million years ago are less diverse.

Specimens include simple filament structures similar to the earliest feathers of non-flying dinosaurs ? a form unknown in modern birds ? and more complicated bird feathers "displaying pigmentation and adaptations for flight and diving," the researchers reported.

Indications of feathers have been found on much older fossils, and the new discoveries indicate feathers continued to develop into modern form before the extinction of dinosaurs, explained Norell, who was not part of the research team.

A separate report by Roy A. Wogelius of the University of Manchester, England, published online June 30 by Science, reports the finding of trace metals in feather fossils, suggesting their colors included black, brown and a reddish-brown.

"Despite many reports over the past decade of feathered dinosaurs and new birds from China, only now are we beginning to understand just how diverse feather types were" millions of years ago, Norell said.
