'How I Met Your Mother' Season 9 Spoilers: Mysterious Tweet Hints at Bad Omen for Barney and Robin's Wedding

Love is in the air. It's time to rekindle old relationships, strum up new ones and tie the knot when the moment's right. The excitement from the crazed summer months begins to dwindle and the colder months creep in. It's time to settle down and prepare for the snuggly winter months. What better way to brave the cold than burrowing under the blankets with a loved one and watching television? And on top of that, what better than to watch shows with romance old and new to set the mood?

Like Us on Facebook

In September, "How I Met Your Mother" will return for it's ninth and final season. As the series comes to a close, there will be plenty of drama and complicated love triangles that will make for an interesting season, as it takes place entirely over the course of Barney and Robin's wedding weekend. In preparation for the thrilling season, the titles for the first six episodes have been revealed, thanks to Spoiler TV. The episodes are titled as follows:

Episode 1 - "The Locket"

Episode 2 - "Coming Back"

Episode 3 - "The Broken Code"

Episode 4 - "Last Time in New York"

Episode 5 - "The Poker Game"

Episode 6 - "No Questions Asked"

Recent tweets have also provided fans with a handful of subtle details that hint at what's to come in the new season.

"Have we ever done an episode of #himym where someone ate a whole cake? Can't remeber," posted creator Carter Bays. Does this perhaps mean that Robin and Ted's wedding cake suffers a tragic fate? Could this be a bad omen for an already shaky wedlock? Fans know that Robin and Ted's long running 'romance' struck a chord at the end of last season when the two were seen holding hands. Although Ted will meet his supposed wife, the Mother, that doesn't mean that he'll immediate forget about his love for Robin.

"How I Met Your Mother" returns to CBS on September 23 with a special hour-long premiere episode.

Robin Thicke: 'Blurred Lines' like 'great art'

Performances

You can run, but you can't hide from "Blurred Lines," the song that has turned out to be the surprise hit of Summer 2013. The song spent 7 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard charts, while also generating a certain amount of controversy for its lyrics.

Thicke took the plaza's stage (holding a shiny gold microphone) to sing the tune, along with "Take It Easy On Me" and to chat with TODAY's Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie on Tuesday. Oh, and they also addressed the debate over the song's lyrics.

"When we made the song we had nothing but the most respect for women," said the 36-year-old singer, who releases his sixth album, also called "Blurred Lines," on Tuesday.

"I've been with the same woman since I was a teenager," he added. "Sometimes the lyrics can get misconstrued when you're just trying to put people on the dance floor and have a good time. But we had no idea it would stir this much controversy.... We only had the best intentions."

Anyway, he says, controversy is good: "That's what great art does, it's supposed to stir conversation, it's supposed to make us talk about what's important."

Well, whether you think "Blurred Lines" is "great art" or not, it sure is a catchy tune. Be sure to check out the videos of Thicke's performances from TODAY and the great tweets, Vines and Instagrams from our fans and TODAY anchors.

Obama, Clinton meet for lunch, sparking 2016 buzz

WASHINGTON (AP) ? When is a lunch more than just a midday meal? When the two diners are President Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, and inquiring minds want to know who, if anyone, the president will endorse in 2016.

A summertime meal shared by Obama and his rival-turned-ally threw the political speculation machine into overdrive Monday, highlighting how closely both are being watched for signs of their intentions in the next presidential race.

For Clinton, it's a question of whether the former first lady will take the plunge, launching another campaign eight years after she lost to Obama in a hard-fought primary. For Obama, it's about dueling loyalties to two of his closest advisers who would both covet his endorsement: Clinton and Vice President Joe Biden, who is also said to be eyeing the Oval Office.

Such questions set the table for a midday powwow over salad, grilled chicken and pasta jambalaya whipped up by the White House chef and served al fresco on the patio just outside the Oval Office.

Will Clinton tip her hand? Will Obama offer his support? Or will the two dive deep into current events ? bloodshed in Egypt, for instance, or a budding new round of Mideast peace that eluded Clinton as secretary of state?

In all likelihood, none of the above.

"The purpose of the lunch was chiefly social," said White House spokesman Josh Earnest, calling it a "chance to catch up" and adding that Obama had initiated the invitation. "Secretary Clinton and the president have developed not just a strong working relationship, but also a genuine friendship."

It's not the first time the two have powwowed since Clinton stepped down in February after four years as Obama's top diplomat. They saw each other briefly in Dallas at the opening of former President George W. Bush's presidential library in April. And in March, the Clintons shared a private dinner with Obama that wasn't announced publicly until after the fact.

In the meantime, Clinton has kept up a hectic schedule of speeches and public appearances that has provided further fodder to those urging her to run again. And a super PAC seeking to create a campaign-in-waiting in case she runs, Ready for Hillary, recently picked up support from some of Obama's most prominent former campaign organizers.

So it's no wonder that each Obama-Clinton rendezvous is closely analyzed, elating some and prompting eye rolls from others who lament that barely six months in to Obama's second term, talk about his replacement is already reaching a fever pitch.

"In Democratic circles, it makes people fantasize and engage in all kinds of speculation, when it fact it may just be a tete-a-tete between the leader of the free world and the most important person in the Democratic Party," said Hank Sheinkopf, a New York-based Democratic strategist who worked on President Bill Clinton's 1996 re-election.

So what are the chances that Biden pops in for coffee and desert, a casual reminder that he's still the one with the office closest to Obama's?

"I think the table was set for two," Earnest said.

Kuwait holds parliamentary election

KUWAIT CITY, Kuwait (AP) ? Kuwaiti voters braved searing heat in the middle of the dawn-to-dusk Ramadan fast to cast ballots Saturday in parliamentary elections that leaders in the oil-rich Gulf nation hope can restore some stability after years of escalating confrontations between its Western-backed rulers and an Islamist-led opposition.

The outcome is likely to be strongly in favor of candidates allied with the ruling dynasty as opposition factions have pledged to boycott the voting ? Kuwait's third parliamentary election in 17 months.

But that is no guarantee of calming the political upheavals, which have touched off street clashes and widening crackdowns by authorities on social media. The ruling Al Sabah family ? a close Washington ally ? is facing criticism of overreaching and imposing heavy-handed tactics against a diverse array of foes that includes liberals seeking greater political openness and groups ideologically tied to Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood.

Kuwait's 50-seat parliament has by far the strongest powers of any elected body among the Gulf Arab states. In the past, opposition lawmakers have directly challenged the government of alleged corruption and claims of muzzling dissent. Kuwait's 84-year-old emir controls all key government positions and policies, yet nowhere else in the Gulf can elected lawmakers block initiatives or publicly officials top officials.

The vote, which unusually falls in the middle of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, was called after a court invalidated the parliament picked in December elections. The court found technical flaws in the election, but let stand new voting rules ordered by Kuwait's ruler that brought one-vote per person.

The former system allowed four votes per person, which could be spread among various candidates. Critics say it encouraged vote buying and pressures by tribal leaders to keep the votes within their clan.

Opposition factions, led by Islamist groups, strongly objected to the change and vowed to boycott the election ? as they did in December. Many Islamists in Kuwait also are dismayed over the country's active support for the military-led leadership in Egypt that took power after toppling Mohammed Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood-led administration earlier this month. Kuwait has pledged $4 billion to Egypt in loans, grants and fuel.

Other Gulf Arab countries are closely watching the moves by Kuwait's Islamists, considered by the United Arab Emirates and others as part of a wider network seeking to bring down their pro-Western fraternity. Washington, too, is deeply vested in Kuwait's stability as a critical link in the Pentagon's military array against nearby Iran. Kuwait hosts thousands of U.S. soldiers in the largest deployment of American ground forces in the region.

Other groups, such as liberals and online activists, appear willing to join the voting this time. But there is still deep-rooted anger on all sides over Kuwait's social media clampdowns, part of wider Gulf efforts to punish Twitter users and others for posts considered insulting to rulers. Dozens of people in Kuwait have faced charges over online posts since last year.

The rare Ramadan election was held during daylight hours despite temperatures expected to peak near 50 degrees (122 F). There has been no official declaration from Kuwait's religious authorities on whether it was acceptable to break the fasting in the withering heat.

But at least two prominent Islamic scholars were quoted in Kuwaiti newspapers as suggesting that circumstances could open room for eating or drinking during the day, which is permitted under Islamic law for instances such as health or long travel.

Mohammad Tabtabai, a Sunni professor of Islamic law at Kuwait University, said long voting lines in the heat could be considered an "extraordinary" event that would allow breaking the Ramadan fast. A Shiite cleric, Mohammad al-Mohri, that breaking the fast could be allowed for voters forced to travel to distant voting stations.

None of the Kuwaiti parliaments elected from 2003 onward has completed its full four-year term. The first elections in Kuwait were held in 1963, two years after the country's independence.

Fox says Parkinson's won't be focus of NBC comedy

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) ? Michael J. Fox says Parkinson's disease will not be a major storyline of his upcoming NBC comedy.

On "The Michael J. Fox Show," the actor plays Mike Henry, a former local NBC newscaster with Parkinson's, who left the business to spend more time with his family. The series begins when he decides to return to work now that his kids are older.

At Saturday's Television Critics Association summer press tour, Fox said he didn't think about how others with Parkinson's would react to the show because he doesn't "vet creative instinct."

"I just go with it," he said. "I feel that this is the reflection of my experience and certainly in the pilot it was more prevalent than it is in subsequent scripts. The way I look at life and the reality of Parkinson's, sometimes it's frustrating and sometimes it's funny. I need to look at it that way and other people need to look at it that way. Beyond that we all got our own bag of hammers...I think people will look at that and say, 'Yeah, I need to laugh at my own stuff, too.'"

The premise of the show does have similarities to Fox's real-life story. The actor left "Spin City" in 2000 as he tried different treatments and medications to treat Parkinson's. He also used the opportunity to spend quality time with his four kids during their formative years.

"There's kind of a scrutiny of their stuff that won't exist if I'm being occupied by something else," joked Fox of the distraction of a full-time job.

Fox believes the viewers, however, will not be distracted by his character having Parkinson's on his new series.

"Parkinson's itself there's nothing horrifying to me. It's not horrible. I don't think it's gothic nastiness. There's nothing on the surface horrible about someone with shaking hands."

Since leaving "Spin City," Fox has had recurring roles on shows like "Rescue Me" and "The Good Wife." Those guest spots gave him the itch to do more.

"It really brought me to a place of, 'This is what I do,'" he said. "This is what I was built and programmed to do, and so I wanted to do it. It's what I've loved to do...I thought, 'Why can't I? There's no reason not to do it.'"

Because Fox plays a local NBC newscaster, the show will tap real people to do guest appearances that make the story more believable. Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie are in the pilot. New Jersey governor Chris Christie will appear in an episode as himself.

"A fictional television network didn't give us 22 episodes," Will Gluck, executive producer, said jokingly on why they decided to make Fox's Mike Henry work for NBC.

The Michael J. Fox Show" premieres Sept. 26 at 9 p.m. EST/PST.

A nod to Abenomics: Japan inflation speeds up

Japanese consumer prices rose in June at their highest annual pace since November 2008, a sign perhaps that the Bank of Japan (BOJ) is slowly winning its fight to end two decades of deflation and boost prices in the world`s third largest economy.

Japan`s core consumer price index, which excludes volatile food prices, rose 0.4 percent year-on-year, turning positive after a flat reading in May.

It was the first time in 14 months that consumer prices have risen. The figure came in just above the expectations of analysts polled by Reuters for a 0.3 percent increase.

(Read more: Weak yen not enough for Japan exporters as China slows)

"The inflation numbers are going in the right direction, so the BOJ is probably going to be pleased," said Bank of Singapore`s Chief Economist Richard Jerram.

The BOJ unveiled an aggressive monetary stimulus program in April to meet a 2 percent inflation target over a two-year horizon.

(Read more: Weak yen? Think again)

Its plan to pump $1.4 trillion into the economy by the end of 2014 has helped weaken the yen , which is in turn helping push up inflation. Japan`s currency has weakened about 15 percent against the dollar so far this year.

The Tokyo core CPI, seen as a good indicator of what will happen to prices across the country, rose 0.3 percent in July after a 0.2 percent increase in June, in line with market expectations.

Not so Fast

Still, analysts said investors should exercise a degree of caution and broader signs of an increase in prices in the Japanese economy are still needed for the BOJ to successfully meet its 2 percent inflation target in two years.

(Read more: Japan consumers haven't been this confident in 7 years)

They pointed out that when food and energy prices are stripped out, Japan`s CPI fell 0.2 percent in June from a year earlier.

"We can safely say that the CPI numbers were better-than-expected, so that`s the modest good news," said Vishnu Varathan, market economist at Mizuho Corporate Bank. "But if you exclude oil and food prices, the CPI was still negative - so the takeaway here is that underlying inflation is still not picking up on a broad basis."

Most economists expect prices to inch higher in Japan as an economic recovery picks up steam and the yen weakens, although there is some skepticism about whether inflation can hit BOJ`s 2 percent goal.

"It [inflation] is trending up, but whether that`s enough to get to 2 percent is debatable," said Bank of Singapore`s Jerram.

"The currency needs to go down another 8-10 percent to help boost inflation," he added.

(Read more: Japan PM Abe's mandate is much smaller than it looks)

The yen was trading at about 99.23 per dollar on Friday, below the key 100-level. Most currency strategists expect the yen to weaken towards the 105-110 area against the dollar by the end of the year.

"By and large what is good news for the economy should be negative for the currency and I would be surprised if it [recent yen strength] was a consistent trend," Michael Woolfolk, senior currency strategist at BNY Mellon, told CNBC Asia`s " Squawk Box ."

Katy Perry overtakes Lady GaGa as most followed woman on Twitter

Katy Perry has overtaken Lady GaGa to become the most followed female on Twitter.

The 'Firework' singer currently has almost 39.9 million followers, compared with GaGa's follower count of almost 39.3 million.

The pair both trail behind Justin Bieber, who recently became the first person to reach over 40 million followers and currently has around 42.3 million.

GaGa has been inactive on Twitter for some months, with her last tweet sent in February and her profile picture changing to the default egg image.

Her silence is thought to be in anticipation of her upcoming album ARTPOP, which will be released as a record and app on November 11.

A report into fake Twitter followers earlier this year suggested that half of Justin Bieber's followers are fake, meaning they are following less than 50 accounts, have less than one follower and have never tweeted themselves.

Both GaGa and Perry were deemed to have more real followers than fake.

New Seymour High School boys basketball coach Kyle Clough is all about energy and enthusiasm, and he has brought that out in local youth with the first Little Owls Youth Boys Basketball Outdoor League.

Games have been played in the parking lot at Seymour Middle School on two recent Thursday nights, and there will be at least one more session.

?It is something we started back in Michigan at the school I used to be at, and it?s kind of a different atmosphere and a little bit of a unique situation,? Clough said. ?It gets the kids outside and back to old-school basketball. It also gives the parents a chance to sit courtside and bring some lawn chairs out. It is something to spark the interest that allows them to have a little bit of fun out in the sun.?

Biden seeks to assure India on Afghanistan, presses on trade

By Prashant Mehra

MUMBAI (Reuters) - U.S. Vice President Joe Biden sought on Wednesday to ease Indian concern about a possible political settlement with the Afghan Taliban, saying the insurgents would have to give up ties to al Qaeda and accept the Afghan constitution that guarantees equal treatment to women.

Biden, seeking to shore up Indo-U.S. ties that have cooled in recent months over trade disputes and intellectual property rights also urged India to shun protectionism, calling for bold decisions to strengthen its economy.

India, which has invested billions of dollars in Afghanistan since the Taliban were ousted from power in 2001, is worried that reconciliation with the Taliban would embolden militant groups, some of which are backed by rival Pakistan, and threaten its interests.

The United States, on the other hand, preparing to withdraw most of its combat troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2014, has backed the talks as part of a broader process to end three decades of bloodshed.

"I know there are questions about the U.S. position on reconciliation with the Taliban," Biden said in a wide-ranging speech at BSE, one of Mumbai's two main stock exchange.

"I want to make clear, we have always been committed to an Afghan-led, Afghan-owned process that needs three outcomes: that the Taliban must break with the al Qaeda permanently, stop the violence, accept the Afghan constitution and guarantee equal treatment for women," said Biden, who is on a four-day trip to India.

Talks with the Taliban are meant to find a way of bringing the insurgents back into the Afghan political process.

A plan to open a Taliban office in Qatar, as part of efforts to promote talks, erupted in a row after Afghan President Hamid Karzai objected to representatives of the Taliban raising their flag and giving the office a nameplate that suggested they wanted to set up a government-in-exile.

"Biden will need to assure the Indians that the U.S. is not pursuing some secret deal with the Taliban that would put Indian regional security interests at risk," Lisa Curtis, a South Asia specialist at The Heritage Foundation, told Reuters.

Curtis said India-U.S. relations had got bogged down in recent months over Afghanistan and Washington's frustration with what it sees as India's protectionist trade policies.

U.S. COMPLAINTS GET LOUDER

U.S. business groups this year have escalated their complaints about India's trade practices, complaining its policies discriminate against American firms or undermine U.S. intellectual property rights, especially for pharmaceuticals.

Biden said the business environment had to improve to open the way for greater bilateral trade, which stands at about $100 billion a year.

"Protection of intellectual property, limits on FDI, inconsistent tax dues, barriers to market access, these are tough problems," he said, referring to foreign direct investment.

"But we all know they have to be negotiated and worked through in order to meet the potential of this relationship."

U.S. drug manufacturers say some Indian decisions have denied patent protections for certain drugs made by Pfizer, Novartis and Bayer to benefit local generic drug companies.

After his speech, Biden held talks with some of India's most prominent business leaders. "There was an honest discussion about how both sides should be productive in reducing some of the barriers that impact trade and commerce," he said later.

For its part, India has opposed provisions in immigration legislation passed by the U.S. Senate that would make it harder for India's information technology workers to get temporary visas to work in the United States.

"How does temporary relocation of workers amount to immigration?" asked an Indian official.

Black college students less likely to ?hook-up?

Black students are less likely to participate in hooking-up in the four years they are in college than white students.

The majority of students participating in the college ?hook-up culture? are white and wealthy, states a study of hook-up behavior.

Definitions of hooking up range from kissing to having sex, and only 20 percent of college students report 10 or more hookups by their senior year in college.

Many studies have focused on the gender of the student, but more recent studies look at students? race and social status.

Lisa Wade cites her own research in an article for Slate, in which she states that students who hook-up 10 or more times while in college ?are more likely than others to be white, wealthy, heterosexual, able-bodied and conventionally attractive.?

African-American students are less likely to partake in hooking-up because they do not want to affirm racist stereotypes and because fraternity houses, which play a major role in the hook-up scene, are less common among black fraternities, according to Slate.

Research done by?sociologists Laura Hamilton and Elizabeth Armstrong found that upper-middle and upper-class students are the most likely to hook-up, noting that they are more career and self-oriented, leaving little time to devote to a relationship.

One subject of the study commented: ??College is the only time that you don?t have obligations to anyone but?yourself. . . . I want to get settled down and figure out what I?m doing?with my life before [I] dedicate myself to something or someone else.?

Motorola Droid Ultra unveiled with unibody Kevlar design, reaches Verizon on August 20th for $199

As expected, the star of the show is here: Verizon has unveiled the Motorola Droid Ultra at its New York City press event. The 5-inch smartphone is "all about thin," according to Moto, and sports a glossy, unibody Kevlar shell that makes it thinner (7.18mm) yet stronger than its predecessors. It's also speedier: a new dual-core X8 Mobile Computing System delivers about 24 percent faster processing power than the previous generations, graphics that are twice as quick and dedicated chips for both contextual computing and language processing. It sports the software tricks we've seen in leaks of the Moto X, such as hands-free voice control, Active Display notifications and Quick Capture. Google's augmented reality game Ingress comes preloaded for more adventurous owners. The Droid Ultra ships August 20th for $199, and pre-orders are starting today.

Indiana Working Families Win Dramatic Improvements In Workers

July 24th, 2013 | Kenneth Quinnell

Kenneth-Quinnell_smallThe Indiana State?AFL-CIO fought for and won dramatic improvements in the workers? compensation system this year. Over the next three years, several major increases in benefits and new workers? rights will be phased in. This will mitigate the effect of workplace injuries on those hurt on the job and their families in the Hoosier State, the Indiana State AFL-CIO reports.

The first part of the new legislation will increase wage replacement benefits. Starting in July 2014, the cap (currently at $975) will be raised by 20% over the following three years to a total of $1,170 in 2016. More workers will receive a full two-thirds of their weekly wage.

The next effect of the legislation deals with increasing compensation for people permanently impaired from a work-related injury. Current law requires doctors to determine how much the injuries impair the employee and compensation is paid to the injured party based on the severity of the impairment. Starting in July 2014 and phased in until 2016, the compensation for work-related injuries will be increased 18 to 25% (based on the severity of the impairment).

Finally, the last new effect of the law will be to place a cap on the amount hospitals will be paid for their services. Hospitals will be paid 200% of the amount Medicare would pay for the same service. Injured employees will not be charged for medical services, which are paid by the employer or the employer?s insurer.

Nancy J. Guyott, president of the Indiana State AFL-CIO, applauded the changes as a move in the right direction via press release:

?Let?s be clear: it?s never OK when your job hurts. And we have a long way to go to make our worker?s compensation system what it should be for workers and their families when an injury does happen. However, these increases are the largest increases workers have won in decades and they begin to move us in the right direction. ?

Male guppies ensure successful mating with genital claws

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Some males will go to great lengths to pursue a female and take extreme measures to hold on once they find one that interests them, even if that affection is unrequited. New research from evolutionary biologists shows that the male guppy grows claws on its genitals to make it more difficult for unreceptive females to get away during mating.

Inslee tours South Lake Union: This is 'world class'

Stephen Brashear

Brandon Morgan, left, of Vulcan talks to Gov. Jay Inslee during a tour of Stack House, an apartment and office complex now under construction in Seattle's South Lake Union. Inslee toured the neighborhood on Tuesday .

With construction occurring on almost every block, the energy in Seattle?s South Lake Union district is palpable. Gov. Jay Inslee stopped by on Tuesday to see what the buzz is about.

?This is world class,? the governor said during a tour with representatives of landowner and developer Vulcan Inc. ?We are seeing energy innovation in action.?

Inslee said he came to South Lake Union to talk about how technology is driving the economy.

Inslee stopped at Amazon.com?s 1.8-million-square-foot headquarters. He also visited PATH, one of nearly 20 life science and global health groups that employ around 8,000 people in the neighborhood.

The governor talked about green construction when he toured Stack House Apartments, a 278-unit Vulcan project with office space that?s under construction at Yale Avenue North and Republican Street.

The goal is to have the U.S. Green Building Council certify the residential portion of Stack House as ?platinum,? which is the highest certification possible under LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).

Vulcan Real Estate Development Manager Brandon Morgan showed the governor Stack House?s heating system and the Swale on Yale, a bio-filtration system that will remove pollutants from storm water that flows off Capitol Hill and into Lake Union.

Jason Sharpley, the Swale on Yale project manager for Seattle Public Utilities, told Inslee the system will filter up to 180 million gallons of storm water annually. Vulcan is paying $1.2 million of the $11.7 million cost.

?Well, congratulations. This is really something to brag about,? said Inslee.

(AP) ? A strong earthquake that shook an arid, hilly farming area in northwest China sparked landslides and destroyed or damaged thousands of brick-and-mud homes Monday, killing at least 75 people and injuring more than 400, the government said.

The quake near the city of Dingxi in Gansu province toppled brick walls and telephone lines, shattered mud-and-tile-roofed houses and sent cascades of dirt and rock down hillsides that blocked roads and slowed rescue efforts by crews trying to reach remote areas.

Hospitals set up aid stations in parking lots to accommodate large numbers of injured, while hundreds of paramilitary People's Armed Police fanned out to search for victims in the region of terraced farmland where the quake struck about 1,200 kilometers (760 miles) west of Beijing.

"I saw the bulb hanging from the ceiling start swinging wildly around. I woke my two friends and we ran into the bathroom to hide," said arts student Li Jingui, 21, who was on the fourth floor of a school dormitory in Dingxi when the shaking started.

"After the strongest tremors were over, we were worried that there would be aftershocks so we packed our stuff and ran out into a large clearing," Li said in a telephone interview.

In addition to the 75 confirmed dead, there were 14 people missing and 459 injured, the central government's China Earthquake Administration said.

Damage was worst in Min county in Dingxi's rural southern portion, where scores of homes were damaged and telephone and electricity services knocked out, Dingxi Mayor Tang Xiaoming told state broadcaster CCTV. All but three of the deaths, all the missing and most of the injured were in Min, a likely result of shoddy construction.

Residents said the shaking lasted about one minute, but wasn't strong enough to cause major damage in urban areas, where buildings are more solidly built.

"You could see the chandeliers wobble and the windows vibrating and making noise, but there aren't any cracks in the walls. Shop assistants all poured out onto the streets when the shaking began," said a front desk clerk at the Wuyang Hotel in the Zhang County seat about 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the epicenter. The clerk surnamed Bao refrained from identifying herself further, as is common among ordinary Chinese.

Tremors were felt in the provincial capital of Lanzhou 177 kilometers (110 miles) north, and as far away as Xi'an, 400 kilometers (250 miles) to the east.

The government's earthquake monitoring center said the initial quake at 7:45 a.m. (2345 GMT Sunday) was magnitude-6.6 and subsequent tremors included a magnitude-5.6.

The quake was shallow, which can be more destructive. The center said it struck about 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) beneath the surface, while the Gansu provincial earthquake administration said it was just 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) deep. The U.S. Geological Survey measured the magnitude of the initial quake as 5.9 and the depth at 10 kilometers (6 miles).

Initial measurements of an earthquake can vary widely, especially if different monitoring equipment is used.

Su Wei, leader of a 120-member rescue team from the paramilitary People's Armed Police, told state broadcaster CCTV that they were on their way to the epicenter, but progress was being slowed by mud and rock slides blocking the road.

The Chinese Red Cross said it was shipping 200 tents, 1,000 sets of household items, and 2,000 jackets to the area and sending teams from both Lanzhou and Beijing to help with relief work and assess further needs.

Heavy rain is expected in the area later in the week, raising the need for shelter and increasing the chance of further landslides.

Almost 2,000 homes were either destroyed or heavily damaged, with thousands more suffering partial damage, according to the Dingxi government website. It said 14,066 households were without power and five county and township roads had been cut.

Gansu province, a region of mountains, desert and pastureland with a population of 26 million, is one of China's more lightly populated provinces, although the New Jersey-sized area of Dingxi has a greater concentration of farms in rolling hills terraced for crops and fruit trees. Dingxi has a total population of about 2.7 million.

China's worst earthquake in recent years was a 7.9-magnitude temblor that struck the southwestern province of Sichuan in 2008, leaving 90,000 people dead or missing.

Man accused in church shooting felt 'disrespected'

OGDEN, Utah (AP) -- A man accused of shooting and nearly killing his father-in-law during a crowded Father's Day church service in northern Utah told authorities he pulled the trigger because he felt "disrespected," prosecutors said Monday.

Weber County deputy attorney Dean Saunders told a judge about the alleged motive of Charles "Ricky" Jennings Jr. at a court hearing in Ogden, about 40 miles north of Salt Lake City. He also argued Jennings, 35, should be kept in jail because he might try to "complete the act" of killing James Evans.

Judge Michael Lyons revoked Jennings' bail, which had been set at $105,000, The Salt Lake Tribune reported (http://bit.ly/17yMOom ).

Police say Jennings shot Evans once in the back of the head June 16 during a Catholic Mass in Ogden. The shooting occurred during a quiet part of the service as about 300 people stood in preparation for communion.

Jennings had walked into the church seconds earlier holding hands with his wife, Cheryl Jennings, who is Evans' daughter.

The bullet remarkably missed Evans' brain, entering near his ear and exiting out his cheek. Evans, 66, is expected to survive but faces a long recovery from the damage done to his jaw.

Jennings is charged with attempted murder. No further details about motive were released.

Jennings' attorney, Michael Bouwhuis, fought the move to revoke bail, saying the amount was too much for Jennings to pay anyway.

Bouwhuis also asked the court to order a review of Jennings' competency. He said that after the shooting, Jennings made comments to detectives about being hypnotized that raised concerns. He also said Jennings has brain damage from an accident 10 years ago that might influence his decision-making.

A competency hearing has been set for Sept. 9.

Detectives have said they thought Jennings might have been drinking or on drugs, and they know he and his wife had a history of domestic disputes that might have triggered the shooting.

Court records show Jennings has a criminal record going back to 1996. Over the years, he has pleaded no contest to felony charges of receiving a stolen vehicle and criminal trespassing. He also has pleaded guilty to theft charges and a felony charge of attempting to tamper with a witness or juror.

Jennings' wife stayed inside the church after he fled. There was no indication she knew what her husband was going to do, and authorities don't expect to file any charges against her.

Jennings was apprehended walking near a highway hours after the shooting. Authorities say he had stolen a truck but it ran out of gas.

After his arrest, Jennings acknowledged he was the man who shot James, court documents show. He told detectives he thought he missed. Jennings said he didn't see what happened because he quickly ran out of the church after several members of the congregation came after him.

Authorities said Jennings wouldn't tell them where he got the gun.

Several days after the shooting, the Rev. Erik Richtsteig - who was leading the Father's Day Mass when the shooting occurred - led churchgoers in a special Catholic ceremony, called the Liturgy of Reparation, to cleanse the place of worship.

"The evil done in this church can stop today, if we can forgive," Richtsteig said that June evening.

22 reported dead in central Chinese earthquake

China Daily via Reuters

A man gives water to an injured woman after an earthquake hit Minxian county in China's Gansu province on Monday.

By M. Alex Johnson, Staff Writer, NBC News

A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck central China on Monday, reportedly killing at least 54 people and collapsing many homes.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake hit in Gansu province about 8 miles east of Chabu at 7:45 a.m. Beijing time (7:45 p.m. ET Sunday). The USGS recorded it at 6 miles deep and said it caused shaking in a rural region where the infrastructure isn't seismically resistant.

State news agency Xinhua said the death toll had risen to 54, citing municipal officials. It put the number of people seriously injured at 296. Earlier official statements put the death toll at 22.?

Photos posted on Chinese social media showed roads on the sides of riverbanks that had subsided and farmhouses reduced to piles of red bricks, Reuters reported.

The official China Meteorological Administration warned that heavy rain was possible in southeastern Gansu province Monday night and into Tuesday. It said the rain could hamper rescue efforts and urged residents to be alert to flash flooding in areas damaged by the earthquake.

Bing Maps

About 5,600 residential buildings were damaged, the Beijing-based China Daily newspaper reported Monday afternoon. Some train service was suspended, and hundreds of armed police were mobilized to repair a damaged part of the main highway linking Lanzhou, the provincial capital, to Minxian county, it reported.

Xinhua said the quake was felt in the neighboring cities of Dingxi, Longnan and Tianshui, as well as Lanzhou, more than 100 miles away. About 19,000 people live in the area that was subject to the strongest shaking, it said.

The quake was followed an hour and a half later by a 5.6-magnitude quake at about the same depth,?the USGS reported.

Based on the history of earthquakes of this size in rural China, there could be "significant casualties," the USGS said.

Gansu abuts Sichuan province, where a 6.6 quake in April killed 164 people and injured more than 6,700, China's worst quake in three years.

(AP) ? Superman is coming back and he'll have a caped co-star.

"Man of Steel" director Zack Snyder announced Saturday at San Diego's Comic-Con that he was making another Superman film and that it will include Batman ? the first time the two superheroes will be united on the big screen.

He declined to reveal many details, saying the script is just being written. He then invited an actor onstage to read a passage to hint at the story line.

"I am the man who beat you," read Harry Lennox, before an image of the Superman logo, backed by the Batman symbol, flashed on the screen.

Warner Bros. then confirmed the first-ever pairing in a statement.

Snyder reimagined Superman in his June blockbuster "Man of Steel," starring Henry Cavill and Amy Adams, which has grossed more than $630 million worldwide.

2016 GOP presidential hopefuls already trading blows

Ask any potential 2016 candidate about their presidential aspirations, and you'll hear the usual non-answers: The next election is a long way off, I'm concentrating on my day job, and, by golly, presidential politics is the last thing on my mind.

The cagey answers are obligatory - anything more forthright would smack of unseemly ambition - but they're also usually rubbish.

Take Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, interviewed Sunday on ABC's "This Week." Cruz, who is believed to be eyeing a presidential run in 2016, was fundraising in Iowa this weekend - a conspicuous and necessary stop for any presidential hopeful. ABC's Jon Karl tried repeatedly to coax something resembling candor out of Cruz, but the freshman Republican declined to take the bait.

Asked if he's running in 2016, Cruz responded: "We are having a national debate about which direction the country should go...And what I am doing now is trying to participate in that national debate. "

"I understand that everyone likes to focus on the politics," he added, but "I'm not focused on the politics."

Cruz challenges Biden to a debate on guns

Karl seemed to smell something funny. "Is it fair to say you're not?" he asked.

Cruz replied: "I've been in the Senate all of seven months. The last office I was elected to was student council. So this has been a bit of a whirlwind."

But despite his lack of expressed interest in the job, it's clear that Cruz would like to keep the door open. Some have raised questions about whether Cruz, born in Canada to a mother from Delaware, is even eligible to be president, given his foreign birth. In the interview with ABC, Cruz dismissed the doubters.

"My mother was born in Wilmington, Delaware," he explained. "She is a U.S. citizen. So I am a U.S. citizen by birth."

And the case is closed, as far as Cruz is concerned. "I'm not going to engage in a legal debate. The facts are clear," he said. "I can tell you where I was born and who my parents were. And then as a legal matter, others can worry about that. I'm not going to engage."

Cruz even managed to sneak in an underhanded dig at another potential GOP hopeful, staking out a platform as an unapologetic conservative that could serve him well in a presidential primary fight come 2016.

He again voiced his opposition to the Senate's comprehensive immigration reform bill, and knocked one of its Republican co-authors, Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., who is also believed to be eyeballing a presidential run in 2016.

"I think [Rubio] believes in the [Senate] bill," Cruz said. But he added, "If the [Senate] bill became law, in another 10, 20 years, we wouldn't have 11 million people here illegally, we'd have 20 or 30 million."

And as Republicans consider 2016, Cruz said, they should seek a candidate who prizes purity over accommodation.

"You know if you look at the last 40 years, a consistent pattern emerges," he explained. "Republicans nominate a candidate for president who runs as a strong conservative, we win. And we nominate a moderate who doesn't run as a conservative, we lose."

Another Republican 2016 hopeful, however, isn't buying Cruz's claim to be a steadfast conservative, and he believes someone like Cruz would lose if nominated.

Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., told CBS News this week that he's "looking at" a run for president to counteract the influence of "isolationists" within the GOP like Cruz and Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., whose policies he said would be "very damaging" to the Republican Party and to the country.

Play Video

Rep. Peter King "looking at" a 2016 presidential bid

On Saturday, King, who has been more frank than most about his presidential designs, again condemned the direction in which Cruz and Paul have steered the GOP's foreign policy conversation, telling ABC that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton would eat them alive in the general election if she secures the Democratic nomination.

"I think she's very strong on foreign policy, and I think that if we nominate someone from our isolationist wing of the party, she'll destroy them," he said.

King reserved some sharp elbows for other Republican presidential hopefuls as well. He suggested Rubio demonstrated some "narrowness" in voting against aid for Hurricane Sandy relief, despite hailing from a state commonly ravaged by hurricanes.

"I have some hard feelings after what he did," King said.

And he said he likes Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wisc., but, "as far as defense, Paul hasn't really spoken out on defense."

That's the state of play for 2016 politics within the GOP: Some potential candidates are already trading blows, but they're trying mightily to keep their next move concealed.

We also have ?The More You Come, The More You Save pricing.? (Without signing a contract!)

About Us:
?
Our goal is to help build a healthy, active community.? We specialize in deep tissue and neuromuscular massage (injury and pain management massage) for those who don?t want to let soft tissue injuries keep them from their active lifestyles, and we provide one-on-one personal training for those who need a little motivation and instruction on how to get fit, stay active and be healthy.

For those who are looking just to decompress and relax a little, our therapist has about an 85% snooze rate.? Meaning there is a chance you could drool a bit.? :-)
