NASA's Kepler discovers multiple planets orbiting a pair of stars

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? Coming less than a year after the announcement of the first circumbinary planet, Kepler-16b, NASA's Kepler mission has discovered multiple transiting planets orbiting two suns for the first time. This system, known as a circumbinary planetary system, is 4,900 light-years from Earth in the constellation Cygnus.

This discovery proves that more than one planet can form and persist in the stressful realm of a binary star and demonstrates the diversity of planetary systems in our galaxy.

Astronomers detected two planets in the Kepler-47 system, a pair of orbiting stars that eclipse each other every 7.5 days from our vantage point on Earth. One star is similar to the sun in size, but only 84 percent as bright. The second star is diminutive, measuring only one-third the size of the sun and less than 1 percent as bright.

"In contrast to a single planet orbiting a single star, the planet in a circumbinary system must transit a 'moving target.' As a consequence, time intervals between the transits and their durations can vary substantially, sometimes short, other times long," said Jerome Orosz, associate professor of astronomy at San Diego State University and lead author of the paper. "The intervals were the telltale sign these planets are in circumbinary orbits."

The inner planet, Kepler-47b, orbits the pair of stars in less than 50 days. While it cannot be directly viewed, it is thought to be a sweltering world, where the destruction of methane in its super-heated atmosphere might lead to a thick haze that could blanket the planet. At three times the radius of Earth, Kepler-47b is the smallest known transiting circumbinary planet.

The outer planet, Kepler-47c, orbits its host pair every 303 days, placing it in the so-called "habitable zone," the region in a planetary system where liquid water might exist on the surface of a planet. While not a world hospitable for life, Kepler-47c is thought to be a gaseous giant slightly larger than Neptune, where an atmosphere of thick bright water-vapor clouds might exist.

"Unlike our sun, many stars are part of multiple-star systems where two or more stars orbit one another. The question always has been -- do they have planets and planetary systems? This Kepler discovery proves that they do," said William Borucki, Kepler mission principal investigator at NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif. "In our search for habitable planets, we have found more opportunities for life to exist."

To search for transiting planets, the research team used data from the Kepler space telescope, which measures dips in the brightness of more than 150,000 stars. Additional ground-based spectroscopic observations using telescopes at the McDonald Observatory at the University of Texas at Austin helped characterize the stellar properties. The findings are published in the journal Science.

"The presence of a full-fledged circumbinary planetary system orbiting Kepler-47 is an amazing discovery," said Greg Laughlin, professor of Astrophysics and Planetary Science at the University of California in Santa Cruz. "These planets are very difficult to form using the currently accepted paradigm, and I believe that theorists, myself included, will be going back to the drawing board to try to improve our understanding of how planets are assembled in dusty circumbinary disks."

Ames manages Kepler's ground system development, mission operations and science data analysis. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., managed the Kepler mission development.

Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. in Boulder, Colo., developed the Kepler flight system and supports mission operations with the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado in Boulder.

The Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore archives, hosts and distributes Kepler science data. Kepler is NASA's tenth Discovery Mission and funded by NASA's Science Mission Directorate at the agency's headquarters in Washington.

Diet to Lose Weight | Healthy Nutrition Info

lose weight Diet to Lose WeightHave you ever wanted to know, how people can be fat? The most common reason is overeating, eating the wrong foods and unhealthy, irregular meal times. Actually, if someone wants to know the drug for weight loss, he had to make major changes in your diet and how to eat so forget the reasons why people can be fat mentioned above.

When talking about weight loss, people always have a thought in her mind like a figure the amount of weight they want to lower the amount of time. Let me explain one thing to you here:

Amount of weight that can be derived by a person depends on a number of factors as well. If two people follow an exercise routine the same and eat the same food, does not mean they?ll both lose weight by the same amount as well.

Run A Balanced Diet

To lose weight in a healthy way, a balance in the diet should be considered. The food we eat should be able to meet the demand of nutrients required by the body as nutrients essences, vitamins, carbohydrates, protein, fiber, calcium and fat.

Food filamentous High

In a variety of diets to lose weight, eat fibrous always been a necessity. High-fiber foods such as fruit raisins, papaya, beans, and others can help digestive process. He is keeping the stomach remains full for a long time, so that one may tend to eat less food for the next meal. Other benefits of a diet rich in fiber are good for losing weight is carbohydrates that can not be digested. When carbohydrates are not digested by the body is removed, it will bind or carry with dirt and grease. This could in turn lowers the accumulation of fat in the body, so as to lose weight.

Protein and Fat

Foods that contain high protein crate of meat, eggs, broccoli and fish are a must in one?s diet. Protein helps build muscle from fat-fat and it can help the process of weight loss. Healthy fats such as those found in olive oil (olive oil) is needed by our bodies in order to remain in good health.

Many diets for weight loss recommend someone not to eat carbohydrates in order to lose weight. However, this is not a healthy way to lose weight. Carbohydrates are an important part of the balance in a variety of foods, it gives your body energy to perform our daily tasks. Instead, one must incorporate into her diet of complex carbohydrates such as those found in brown rice, rice, cereal, wheat bread, etc..

Write on the agenda or your phone screen: Avoid fattening Foods! to always remind you. Solution when you are hungry before the main meal: drinking water or eating fruit.

Eat a Low Calorie Food

You will be surprised to learn there are certain foods that contain calories much lower than that required by the body to digest it! So, add these foods into your diet every day of the diet such as tomatoes, cucumbers, apples, cabbage, lettuce, radishes, cauliflower, carrots, peaches, grapes, watermelon and lemon.

Eat 5 Times With A Small Portion

If you tend to eat a lot of meals at a time, you had to leave this way, if you want to lose weight. Eat small portions and distribute your food in a couple of meals a day! 5 to 6 meals a day is the best way for our digestion than eating 3 meals with large portions. Another thing you need to remember here is the dinner you should be very little, while the breakfast your biggest meal of the day is you. These studies found that when eggs are served at our breakfast menu, can help you lose weight.

(AP) ? In an isolated stretch of Jordanian desert, a heavily guarded, secret compound houses 1,200 senior police and army officers who defected from nearby Syria.

The men live in trailers with fans but no air conditioning, surrounded by barbed wire, and they pass their days browsing the Internet and watching TV for news of Syria's civil war, longing to join the fight ? but they are largely unable to leave.

The Jordanian military runs the camp near a site formerly used by the U.S. to train some its forces for the war in Iraq, and the defectors are debriefed by intelligence agents. Access to them is tightly restricted for their own protection. They are even separated from their families, who live outside the camp near the northern border city of Mafraq but can get special police permits to visit.

The defectors in the camp are allowed to communicate with the rebel Free Syrian Army in Jordan and abroad, both in person and through telephone and Internet communications, but do not have what is considered valuable intelligence, according to Jordanian security officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not allowed to make press statements.

The facility is a sign of Jordan's growing role as a quiet supporter of Syria's opposition. But at the same time, Jordan wants to avoid aggravating tensions with its more powerful northern neighbor, fearing that President Bashar Assad may remain in power.

There are more than 160,000 Syrian refugees in Jordan, and their number is increasing by the thousands every day. About 8,000 live in a newly set up camp on the border, while the rest are scattered across Jordan.

Maintaining control over the refugees poses a security threat to the small, tightly controlled kingdom. Jordanian security officials and refugees have said there were pro-Assad "sleeper cells" in Jordan that could act against the refugees.

Jordan has rejected several requests by the Assad government for the extradition of the defectors and has allowed entry to hundreds of Syrian rebels who move freely around the country. It also has helped the refugees by giving them medical treatment.

It is not clear if former Syrian Prime Minister Riad Hijab, the most prominent defector to flee to Jordan, is housed in the desert facility or one elsewhere. Hijab fled under a plan coordinated between the Amman government and the Free Syrian Army.

The Associated Press asked to visit the desert facility but was denied access. However, the AP spoke to two of the camp residents who described the conditions there.

Khaldoun, a 47-year-old former Syrian army brigadier, said there were dozens of trailers housing up to seven men each, with fans stirring the desert air. Armed Jordanian soldiers guard the compound around the clock, he said.

The men spend their days exercising and playing backgammon and chess, and the Jordanians provide them with access to the Internet, TVs, cellphones and computers, said Khaldoun, who insisted on being identified by his first name only, citing concern for the safety of relatives in Syria.

"It's good to be here, away from the tension and war, but this is not what I had hoped for," he told the AP.

"I wanted to be part of the rebel movement fighting to liberate Syria," Khaldoun added. He said he spends most of his day watching TV, exchanging gossip, or browsing the Internet for news on the violence back home.

"It's difficult to watch the war in Syria on TV and the Internet and not be part of it," he added.

Khaldoun defected to Jordan in January at the height of the Assad regime's crackdown on his hometown, the central city of Homs, which became the hub of the uprising that began in March 2011. Hailing from a prominent Sunni Muslim family, he served in the 7th Armored Division for 23 years until his escape.

The security defectors range in rank from corporal to general ? but they said their access to state and military information was limited because as Sunnis they were kept in the dark by the inner circle of the ruling Alawite minority ? a Shiite Muslim offshoot ? that surrounds Assad.

The Jordanian security officials said access to the defectors was restricted because of concerns that pro-Assad elements could try to attack them.

A series of attacks on Syrians in Jordan has led refugees and Jordanian officials to believe agents of the Assad regime are operating in the kingdom on a campaign to hunt down opponents and intimidate those who have fled. Jordan has also arrested supposed defectors on suspicion that they were spying on Syrian refugees and dissidents.

The camp housing the defectors is near Jordan's largest air force base, which had been used as a training facility for U.S. forces in the past two decades during and after the wars in neighboring Iraq.

Jordanian government officials have refused to comment about the desert camp, saying that they have little information about the defectors.

The camp's refugees fled in batches since the uprising began, with most of them smuggled through a northern border fence by the Free Syrian Army and later interrogated by Jordanian intelligence to verify their identities and the authenticity of their stories, one of the Jordanian security officials said.

The defectors are between 40 and 60 years old, and some have chronic ailments such as high blood pressure, diabetes and back problems that prevented them from being in the frontline in Syria or joining the rebels, the officials said.

A handful of other senior military and police defectors are kept at a secret location elsewhere, one of the security officials said, including Syrian air force Col. Hassan Hammadeh, who flew his MiG-21 to Jordan on June 21.

Most of the defectors were seen as "small fish" who for the most part did not provide actionable intelligence, according to the Jordanian security officials and a Jordan-based Western diplomat who spoke on condition of anonymity because identifying him would compromise his ability to gather information on Syria.

Still, one of the defectors at the desert compound said that as a colonel in the military, he held such a high rank that the Assad regime would go to great lengths to strike back at him.

"They would destroy a whole suburb if they think one of us is there," said the colonel, who identified himself only as Rahal, citing fears of retribution against relatives still in Syria.

"This is why I had to get out of Syria," he added.

Rahal said he and 37 other officers were jailed shortly after the start of the uprising, but a number of them were given amnesty and released in May. The regime told him to report to work but merely shuffled him from one office to another, he said.

"I had no real job, just drinking tea and watching TV," the 45-year-old said.

He said he decided to defect when the security forces "decided to militarize the conflict in order to end the crisis."

Rahal predicted the Free Syrian Army would ultimately get the weapons it needs to finish off Assad.

"The Free Syrian Army is like a group of birds on a tree. If the regime tries to shoot one of the birds, the group flies off to another tree. The regime will never get them all," he said.

Armstrong, the?first man to walk on the moon?and commander of NASA's Apollo 11 lunar landing mission,? died at age 82 sue to complications from recent heart surgery, his family said. Armstrong had heart bypass surgery earlier this month to clear blocked arteries.

Many astronauts with NASA and other space agencies cited Armstrong as a major inspiration in their lives in their Twitter messages. Others reflected on the legendary astronaut's modesty, despite his global fame.

"I know I am joined by millions of others in mourning Neil's passing ? a true American hero and the best pilot I ever knew," wrote?Apollo 11?astronaut Buzz Aldrin, who walked with Armstrong on the moon on July 20, 1969, in his Twitter post. He writes as @TheRealBuzz.

Several active and former NASA astronauts wrote that?Armstrong inspired them?to pursue dreams of flying in space.

"I am deeply saddened by the?passing of Neil Armstrong," wrote former astronaut Leroy Chiao (@AstroDude),? four-time spaceflyer and commander the International Space Station. "He was my childhood hero, who inspired me to become an astronaut myself." [Photos: Neil Armstrong ? American Icon Remembered]

Former shuttle astronaut Mae Jemison, the first African-American woman to fly in space, agreed.

"As young girl watching #NeilArmstrong step on the moon, the stars came a little bit closer & my world & expectations quite a bit larger," Jemison wrote as ?@maejemison.

Christopher Ferguson, the commander of NASA's last space shuttle mission (STS-135 in July 2011), was touched by Armstrong's modest demeanor despite his great feats in space.

"Today we lost a legend," Ferguson wrote Saturday as @AstroFerg." Neil was a source of personal inspiration and a humble and unassuming American hero."

But Armstrong was more than just an American icon. His legacy reached out across the entire world, as astronauts from Japan, Canada and Europe pointed out.

"RIP #NeilArmstrong, the 1st moonwalker. He inspired me to fly high," wrote astronaut Soichi Noguchi of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (@Astro_Soichi), who included a photo of the moon in one of his two posts. " Salute to #NeilArmstrong, the 1st moonwalker. He inspired me deeply, long before I become spacewalker."

The Key To Successful Real Estate Buying | Marathon Real Estate ...

Now?s the time to buy property, like the others, during this downturn in the American economy. This is a great market to buy into right now, as the rates are low and the required investment is small. The advice given throughout this article will help you find a solution for a price that is affordable and destined to be profitable.

When in the market to purchase a new home, always consider your long-term situation. While you might not have kids currently, for instance, it?s a good idea to check into the local schools near a potential house if you are planning to have children down the road.

TIP! A smart real estate agent will keep good contact with clients long after the sale, sending holiday cards and noting the anniversary of the home?s sale. Hearing again from you will let them remember of how you helped them when they were selling or buying.

Having five or more years of experience is something an appraiser should have if you?re going to hire one when you?re purchasing real estate. Hire an appraiser independent of any real estate office. Often times there will be conflicting interests. It is also important to ensure your appraiser is properly licensed and certified.

TIP! Look for parking areas near the home you are considering buying. This is of particular importance for any home you are considering that has no driveway.

It is important that you have a home inspection done before purchasing property. Although you?ll have to pay a fee, hire a professional home inspector to conduct the inspection so that you will have recourse if something gets missed in the inspection.

When you are looking to make a great investment on your real estate, you should consider doing some repair and remodel work. You?ll experience the benefit of a fast return on investment and increase in property value. Sometimes your property value will increase more than the money you put in.

TIP! If you can, stay away from buying property that is facing or backs into a busy road. You may be tempted to purchase these homes, but there is a reason that they are cheaper.

One simple way to start the entire real estate buying process is to get organized. You should have a notebook full of the information you get from newspapers, friends, online, and also from your agent. If you use this method, you will have all of your findings in one place if you need to refer to it.

Those who are wise and jump into this swirling market should follow the above article closely. It will help you avoid trouble and walk away with real estate that is under-priced and growing constantly in value. The key is to purchase the property and hold until the time is right before you make your big move.

TIP! When negotiating a real estate deal, it is wise to prioritize your goals. Look at all of the issues involved, and determine your expectations for every one of them.

NASA to broadcast first song from Mars today

A song called "Reach for the Stars" will make its debut, appropriately, from space.

NASA plans to broadcast the tune, written by rapper and songwriter will.i.am, from its Curiosity rover, newly landed on the surface of Mars.

Though Curiosity has no speakers, it will transmit the song via radio waves back to Earth to be received at 1 p.m. PDT (4 p.m. EDT) Tuesday, Aug. 28 during an educational event at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif.?

"Members of the team that successfully landed the rover on Mars earlier this month will explain to students the mission and the technology behind the song's interplanetary transmission," NASA officials wrote in a statement. "will.i.am will then premiere 'Reach for the Stars,' a new composition about the singer's passion for science, technology and space exploration.?

During the event, NASA scientists and mission managers will talk about the Curiosity mission and explain the technology behind the broadcast to students. It won't be the first broadcast from space?NASA used the Mars rover to broadcast a spoken message from the space agency's chief, Charles Bolden, today (Aug. 17).

The musician will.i.am, a member of hip-hop group The Black-Eyed Peas, was onsite at JPL Aug. 5 (PDT) to watch Curiosity land on Mars. The car-size, $2.5 billion rover is beginning a two-year mission to investigate whether Mars ever had the conditions necessary to support microbial life.

FDA approves 4-in-1 HIV combination pill

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Food and Drug Administration on Monday approved a new anti-HIV pill that combines four medicines to combat the virus that causes AIDS.

The agency approved Gilead Sciences' Stribild as a once-a-day treatment to control HIV in adults who have not previously been treated for infection.

The pill contains two previously approved antiviral drugs, emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate, currently sold as the combination pill Truvada. Those drugs are combined with two new drugs: elvitegravir and cobicistat. Elvitegravir interferes with one of the enzymes that HIV needs to multiply. Cobicistat helps prolong the effect of elvitegravir.

Company studies showed that 88 to 90 percent of patients taking Stribild had an undetectable level of HIV in their blood after 48 weeks, compared with 87 percent for patients taking Atripla, another HIV drug that contains Truvada and one other drug.

An estimated 1.2 million Americans have HIV, which develops into AIDS unless treated with antiviral drugs. AIDS causes the body's immune system to break down, leading to infections which are eventually fatal.

Patients can live relatively healthy, normal lives when treated with antiviral cocktails.

Like most other HIV drugs, Stribild will carry a boxed warning about potentially dangerous side effects, including severe liver problems and the buildup of lactic acid. More common side effects include nausea and diarrhea.

Earlier this year, Gilead received FDA approval to market Truvada as the first preventive medicine for healthy people who are at high risk of acquiring HIV. Truvada was first approved in 2004 for patients already infected with the virus.

Gilead Sciences Inc. is based in Foster City, Calif. Shares of the company fell 10 cents to close at $57.19 and then added 11 cents in after-hours trading.

Armstrong's small step a giant leap for humanity

WASHINGTON (AP) ? When man first harnessed fire, no one recorded it. When the Wright Brothers showed man could fly, only a handful of people witnessed it. But when Neil Armstrong took that first small step on the moon in July 1969, an entire globe watched in grainy black-and-white from a quarter million miles away

We saw it. We were part of it. He took that "giant leap for mankind" for us.

Although more than half of the world's population wasn't alive then, it was an event that changed and expanded the globe.

"It's a human achievement that will be remembered forever," said John Logsdon, professor emeritus of space policy at George Washington University. Those first steps were beamed to nearly every country around the world, thanks to a recently launched satellite. It was truly the first global mass media event, Logsdon said. An estimated 600 million people ? 1 out of every 5 on the planet ? watched.

The two historical events likely to be long remembered from the 20th Century are the moon landing and the first atomic bomb, said Smithsonian Institution space curator Roger Launius.

"There is no way to overestimate that significance in human history and he is forever linked to that," Launius said of Armstrong, who died Saturday at age 82.

??????????????? Just as the voyage of Christopher Columbus split historic eras 500 years ago, so will Neil Armstrong and Apollo 11, said Rice University historian Douglas Brinkley, a specialist in 20th Century history.

??????????????? "We may be living in the age of Armstrong," said Brinkley, who conducted oral histories for NASA, including sessions with Armstrong.

The late science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke wrote that the Apollo 11 moon landing was "one of the great divides in human history; we are sundered from it forever by the moment when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin stepped out on to the Sea of Tranquility. Now history and fiction have become inexorably intertwined."

Since that day, there's been a common phrase: "If we can send a man to the moon, why can't we ... ?" with the blank filled with a task that seems far less difficult.

Armstrong's small step was that leap in confidence telling the world "if we can do this, we can do anything," said Howard McCurdy, a professor of space and public policy at American University and author of the book "Space and the American Imagination."

"He took something that 20 years earlier was pure fantasy and turned it into reality and if we could do that for space we could do it for anything," McCurdy said Saturday.

The Apollo 11 moon landing was the finish line in a decade-long space race started by the Soviet Union. And so the first steps on the moon coming from an American civilian had many meanings. Getting there first showed American technological superiority, but Armstrong mentioned mankind ? not Americans ? demonstrating that this was a moment for the people of Earth, McCurdy said.

Armstrong and Aldrin left a plaque on the moon that read:? "Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the moon. July 1969 A.D. We came in peace for all mankind."

For all mankind. And that's how the world took it.

"The success for America (is a) success for every living man" reported the Swahili-language newspaper Nguromo of Dar.

And if that wasn't enough, Armstrong and Aldrin also left a patch to commemorate NASA astronauts and Soviet cosmonauts who had died in pursuit of space.

"It was special and memorable but it was only instantaneous because there was work to do," Armstrong told an Australian television interviewer this year.

The Cold War may have slightly muted the significance of the event at the time, but over the years the importance of the moon landing has only grown, Logsdon said.

It's permeated into culture. The moon landing is in movies, television, books, songs and it was even Michael Jackson's signature dance step. That's probably because in some ways that moonwalk touched something that has been hard-wired into humanity: the need to explore. For 25,000 years, humans have been migrating and pushing into new places. Armstrong took it to new heights.

John Glenn, the first American to orbit the Earth, noted it was "the first time any human being set foot on a place other than Earth, and that's a pretty big step."

GOP to Florida: No more primary calendar changes

Republican rule-makers are drafting tougher penalties for states like Florida that schedule presidential primaries earlier than the party wants them to.

The tentative vote by the Republican convention rules committee seems to strengthen Iowa's and New Hampshire's traditional role of hosting the nation's first presidential votes.

Using existing rules to punish Florida for jumping the line in the primary calendar, Republican leaders cut in half the state's number of delegates to next week's nominating convention in Tampa. Florida will have 50 voting delegates, not 99.

Under the rules change tentatively approved Friday, states that buck future official GOP primary schedules will be granted no more than 12 voting delegates.

The proposed change is subject to final votes by the committee and by the full convention.

Improving Your Web site traffic

Traffic is the lifeblood of the website, and needs to be the main focus of the website efforts together with Seo (SEO), indeed it's a mixture of the two that dictates whether your web business will be a success or not.

First of all you can be a life long marketing person that thinks they know everything with regards to bringing in visitors to a business, that in turn results in sales. Well alas when it comes to getting visitors on the Internet then think again. Many traditional marketing methods function not work, as many traditional marketing individuals have found out for their cost, sometimes with major corporations losing business to one man exercising of his back room at home.

A simple principle is that the Internet isn't governed by anyone and therefore there is no rule book to follow along with as there are no rules! So always keep your mind open regarding how you can enhance your site's ranking and traffic.

how to increase website traffic

To enhance your traffic you'll have to market your website both online and offline. First of all you might think "Why should i market offline for an internet business?" Well picture this a guy walks to your DIY store and buys a brand new cordless drill, and you allow him to go out from the store after he's bought it. That's good right? You have just made a sale perhaps you have not? Well no, you've just let a future online customer walk right out from the door. Why did you not get his email address?

So why do I even require it you might think? Well otherwise how are you going to email him telling him about your Christmas special sales offer on cordless drill spare batteries? Now are you obtaining the idea why you'll need offline marketing to enhance internet marketing and bring you increased traffic?

My second point is that the best traffic you will get is free of charge traffic, and this normally comes from Search Engine Optimisation completed by your web developer. To put it simply the better your SEO the more no cost traffic you're going to get, now okay you will have to pay your internet developer for their Search engine optimization, however this is likely to give you a excellent Roi (ROI) and continue to provide you with in lots of free traffic with an ongoing basis. This will certainly represent a much better investment than going straight into a Ppc (PPC) campaign they are driving visitors to your site, that won't continue to flow when your Pay per click campaign ends.

Gaining free traffic is difficult and when it was we would all be Internet millionaires, and so you should look towards building your traffic from sustainable sources over the long term and steer clear of flash within the pan traffic generation methods that may fizzle out overnight.

The main thing to understand is that building good free traffic needs time to work to complete, and you always have to take this into account.

Putin says Russian nuclear cuts to hinge on U.S. missile shield

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Moscow is open to the idea of new nuclear arms cuts on a reciprocal basis and if Washington addresses its concerns about a U.S.-led missile defence system in Europe, President Vladimir Putin said on Friday.

Putin said preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction was "a key issue on the world agenda" and said Russian compliance with the 2010 New START treaty, which cut U.S. and Russian nuclear arsenals, was proof of Moscow's commitment to disarmament.

"Russia is open to new joint initiatives in this area," Putin said, in a written address sent to a meeting of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War being held in Hiroshima, Japan.

"At the same time, their realization is clearly possible only on a fair mutual basis and if all factors affecting international security and strategic stability are taken into account," he said.

Those factors included what he called "the unilateral and totally unlimited deployment of a global U.S. missile defence system" as well as the possibility of the deployment of weapons in space and a lack of parity in conventional weapons in Europe.

U.S. plans for a missile defence shield in Europe, which Washington has already begun to deploy, have been a major irritant to U.S.-Russia relations despite President Barack Obama's decision to scale the original plans back.

Washington says the shield is meant to counter a potential threat from Iran and will pose no risk to Russia.

But Moscow says the system's interceptors will be able to destroy Russian warheads in flight by about 2018, upsetting the post-Cold War balance of power and weakening Russia's nuclear arsenal.

In a foreign policy decree issued on May 7, the day his inauguration ceremony for a six-year presidential term took place, Putin reiterated Moscow's demands for firm U.S. guarantees that the shield is not directed against Russia.

Four days earlier, the chief-of-staff of Russia's armed forces said Moscow could carry out pre-emptive strikes on future missile defence installations in Europe to protect its security.

The European system will include interceptor missile installations in Poland and Romania and a radar station in Turkey as well as interceptors and radars on ships based in the Mediterranean Sea.

Should I Buy Gold? Ask Robert Bhat - Credit Card and Finance Tips

As a finance professional, Robert Bhat frequently gets asked the question, Should I buy gold?? Because Robert Bhat primarily deals with commercial real estate and investments for big industries, he?s quick to tell inquisitors that he?s not the most qualified person to speak on personal investments.? However, because Robert Bhat is so frequently confronted with the question, he wants to take a moment to address the great precious metal issue.

Who Are You?

Robert Bhat will always respond to this question with one of his own: Who are you?? The question digs at something more than simple identity!? For Robert Bhat, no one should ever buy anything as a blanket rule.? Whether or not you buy gold (or any other precious metal) should be determined not by gold, but by your own financial situation and portfolio.

If you?re looking to diversify your portfolio, and you have liquid cash with which you can do so, then Robert Bhat believes that smart precious metal investments can turn out to be quite profitable in the long run.? However, if you only have $800 to ?play with,? Robert Bhat doesn?t consider gold and other precious metals to be essential investments for those who have a more limited net worth.

How Long Will You Hold?

Gold and other precious metals, advises Robert Bhat, are not for short term investors.? While the price of gold may have risen quickly in recent years, that doesn?t guarantee it will continue to do so in the next few months.? Robert Bhat always counters gold-proponents who cite its recent soar in price by reminding them that past performance never guarantees future performance.

Of course, more authoritative articles can help you continue to work through this decision.? But, Robert Bhat is happy to offer what advice he does have on precious metals as investments.

Grim economic report provides Romney with opening

Aug 22, 2012 3:29pm

abc romney 4 jt 120811 wblog Grim Report on Economy Gives Mitt Romney an Opening to Shift Back to Economic Message

ABC News

BETTENDORF, Iowa ? Mitt Romney bounded into the battleground state of Iowa today, aided by a new, non-partisan government report that painted a grim picture of the state of the economy, using the new data to return his campaign?s narrative to his favorite catch phrase: the Obama economy isn?t working.

For Romney, it?s just the topic he?d hoped to return to following days that have been focused on contentious comments by Rep. Todd Akin, R-Mo., about abortion that have forced Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan, to step into the fray and comment on the controversy.

The government report, released today by the Congressional Budget Office, estimated a $1.1 trillion deficit for 2012, and said that if the tax and spending cuts go through as planned in January that ?such fiscal tightening will lead to economic conditions in 2013 that will probably be considered a recession.?

The report also predicted that the country?s unemployment rate would remain above 8 percent for the rest of the year.

Get more pure politics at?ABCNews.com/Politics?and a lighter take on the news at?OTUSNews.com

?President Obama, bless his heart, has tried to substitute government for free people and it has not worked and it?ll never work,? said Romney, who spoke at an aluminum casting manufacturer in eastern Iowa, his second trip to the state this month.

?I mentioned he said he?d cut the deficit in half; he doubled it,? Romney said. ?He said he?d get people good jobs. Instead, we?ve gone 42 straight months with unemployment over 8 percent, 23 million Americans out of work or stopped looking for work. It?s inexcusable.?

Romney did not mention the latest government report by name.

?You look at all of the debt of the country: why, it?s about the size of our entire economy,? said Romney.

Earlier today, the White House put out a statement on the report, pointing the blame back on the Republicans.

?Today?s Congressional Budget Office report only reinforces the urgent need for House Republicans to follow the Senate?s lead and pass a bill that gives middle class families the confidence that they won?t see their taxes go up at the beginning of next year,? wrote White House press secretary Jay Carney. ?But instead of doing the right thing, Republicans in Washington have chosen to double down on the same failed policies that led to the economic crisis in the first place. They?re willing to hold the middle class hostage unless we also give massive new tax cuts to millionaires and billionaires ? tax cuts we can?t afford that would do nothing to strengthen the economy.?

Potency of statins linked to muscle side effects

ScienceDaily (Aug. 22, 2012) ? A study from the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, published August 22 online by PLoS ONE, reports that muscle problems reported by patients taking statins were related to the strength or potency of the given cholesterol-lowering drugs.

Adverse effects such as muscle pain and weakness, reported to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) were related to a statin's potency, or the degree by which it typically lowers cholesterol at commonly prescribed doses.

"These findings underscore that stronger statins bear higher risk -- and should be used with greater caution and circumspection," said investigator Beatrice Golomb, MD, PhD, professor in the Departments of Medicine and Family and Preventive Medicine at the University of California, San Diego.

Golomb teamed up with researchers from California-based AdverseEvents, Inc., using the company's software platform to conduct a detailed examination of statin side-effect data from the FDA's Adverse Event Reporting System (AERS). The study analyzed muscle-related adverse events linked to each of the major statin drugs in total of 147,789 AERS reports, gathered between July 2005 and March 2011.

Looking at the most commonly used statins -- both brand names and, when available, generic forms of the drugs -- rosuvastatin, the strongest statin, had the highest rates of reported problems. This was followed by atorvastatin, simvastatin, pravastatin, and lovastatin.

"These rankings closely match the individual potencies of each statin. Thus, the strength of the statin drug appears to be a dominant factor in determining how likely muscle problems are to occur," said Golomb, who directs the Statin Adverse Effects Study at UC San Diego.

Rates were determined for each statin by tallying reports of muscle side effects, standardized to the number of prescriptions filled for that drug. This was done for individual muscle side effects, as well as for side effects overall.

Some experts have maintained that rosuvastatin, the strongest statin, should have superior safety, because it is less fat soluble, and was thereby assumed not to penetrate into muscle cells as much as other statins. In addition, rosuvastatin is not cleared by common drug-clearance pathways that are sometimes involved in adverse drug interactions.

"The FDA AERS data analyzed in this study, however, suggests that the higher potency of rosuvastatin may more than offset any safety advantages due to such factors," Golomb said. She added that pooled analysis of statin studies in patients with stable heart disease do not indicate that higher strength statins result in a lower death rate. Therefore, "evidence showing that stronger statins may pose a greater risk of side effects is particularly important."

"Post-marketed studies utilizing AERS data are becoming increasingly important to understand the lasting side effect risks of widely used medications in disparate populations. Until recently, conducting such studies has been difficult due to the fractured and inaccessible nature of the FDA's raw data," said Brian Overstreet, CEO of AdverseEvents. The study utilized the company's unique data sourcing method called RxFilter?, which analyzed more than 140,000 AERS case reports filed with FDA over a six-year time period.

Statins are among the most widely taken prescription medications in the world, with over 30 million users in the United States alone and $19 billion in domestic sales. They are prescribed to lower cholesterol, and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Their use has been linked to a variety of muscle-related side effects (together termed "statin myopathy") that occur in as many as 10 to 15 percent of all statin users. These include commonly reported problems such as pain and weakness, as well as life-threatening muscle breakdown, known as rhabdomyolysis. Statin myopathies can significantly increase pain and injury risk and affect mobility, especially in older individuals.

"Only a fraction of adverse effects are reported to the FDA, and a range of factors can influence reporting rates and accuracy of this information," Golomb said. "However, findings from this study align with -- and extend -- other forms of evidence."

For instance, an earlier study from Golomb's group at UC San Diego showed that patients with muscle problems related to statins often found relief from symptoms after stopping one statin. However, muscle pain or weakness consistently redeveloped if the patient was then placed on a higher potency statin, while patients placed on a lower potency statin had significantly lower risk of recurrence.

"Our findings suggest that individual statin potency is a critical determinant of how likely a statin is to cause problems," Golomb concluded. "This information should help guide prescribing decisions for statins by offering more information on the risk-benefit profile of the class. It should also be important for guiding decisions about statin selection and use after a patient has experienced a muscle-related adverse event."
