Justice For Kingsley ? 1981-2011 | WhatsOn Blog

Kingsley Burrell, 29, dialled 999 after being threatened by a group of men while with his young son in Icknield Port Road, Birmingham, on March 27th last year. But when officers turned up they detained the trainee security guard under the Mental Health Act ? despite his family saying he had no history of mental illness. Within hours Mr Burrell was sectioned and taken to a mental health unit in the city where his family claim he had mysterious physical injuries and was not allowed to speak to them. Three days later police were called to the Mary Seacole mental institute in Winson Green, Birmingham, after an ?incident? involving the dad-of-two and he was transferred to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, where he died on March 31st.
Kingsley was a son profusely loved by his parents, sisters, family and friends. He was a man of principle, a father of two, a brother and an uncle. He was quiet and had a pleasantly smooth approach and would touch the heart of anyone who he came into contact with. He was also an ordinary man of the community. His family and indeed the whole community are outraged by this tragic and unnecessary death. We need to know how and why Kingsley died. Kingsley Burrell?s family also need answers. ?We want the truth and nothing but the truth?. Equality campaigners Lee Jasper and Maxie Hayles, Chairman of the Birmingham Racial Attacks Monitoring Unit, have joined the family in support of the campaign.
The family of Kingsley Burrell urge people to sign the following on-line e-petitions: Black Deaths In Police Custody http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/18188, created by Joe Aldred and Deaths in Police, Prison, Mental Health, and Immigration Detention http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/26276, created by Tippa Naphtali.
In addition, to the above petitions, we all have a part to play by attending human rights marches, to prevent future generations from dying in custody. Please join the campaign march on Saturday 18th August at 1pm in Centenary Square, Birmingham.
