When Posh came to shove: Why Goldenballs retired - The Sun

DAVID Beckham is quitting football for Posh ? after vowing to see more of his wife and kids.

Beckham, 38, believed he could carry on playing for MORE than the one-year contract extension offered by his club Paris St Germain.

But his sons were begging him to collect them from school in London and Victoria wanted her Goldenballs back ? so he decided to hang up his boots.

A close pal said: ?David was seriously considering another year at PSG ? who wouldn?t? ? but he realised it was best for them as a family to stop now.

?Everything he has said about wanting to leave at the top is true ? and it worked out very nicely, winning the French title.

?But he would have continued. The major and deciding factor was Victoria and the kids.

?Football for David was always the priority. At 38, that has now changed. And rightly so.?

Posh?s parents have been babysitting Brooklyn, 14, Romeo, ten, Cruz, eight, and one-year-old daughter Harper in South London while she is away on fashion business and Becks is in Paris.

Although she was always supportive of her husband, Victoria, 39, was not prepared to move to Paris, according to the close pal.

The friend said: ?It was never going to happen. It?s a short trip on the Eurostar and there was no need. But Vic was tired of going to family functions on her own and wanted her husband back.

?It?s not like they are old. Outside of football they?re a couple with a young family.?

Beckham will definitely play in PSG?s match at home to Stade Brest tonight. His last game as a professional will be away to FC Lorient next Saturday.

After he hangs up his boots he is expected to be offered a job at the FA to help homegrown talent.

But the mate revealed Beckham ? who has ?175million in the bank ? has also expressed an interest in investing in a Premier League club, with a view to one day holding a majority stake.

The pal added: ?There are clubs that would bite his arm off to have him associated with them. Any financial offerings from David would be nothing more than a gesture. He is holding all the cards. And they?re 52 aces.?

Tributes continued to pour in for the former England midfielder yesterday. PSG coach Carlo Ancelotti said: ?He loves his job, he is a very, very humble player.

?These are the best qualities I saw in his character. He had fantastic passing qualities ? he was one of the best in the world in that department.?

But former England winger Chris Waddle got flak online after arguing Becks was good ? but not great. He said: ?You can go down a list of players from the Premier League or the 70s or 80s, whatever you want to do. I?ll be honest, Beckham probably wouldn?t be in the first 1,000.?

- MANCHESTER United fans are the happiest in the Premier League, according to a Ladbrokes poll of 2,000 football supporters.

MANCHESTER United fan Jon Boardman spent four hours getting a tattoo of Sir Alex Ferguson?s face ? on his RIBS.

The 44-year-old from Manchester, who has more than 40 tattoos on his body, said: ?As soon as the news of his retirement came through I made my appointment. I decided to get the tattoo on the back of my ribs as I haven?t got a lot of space left anywhere else.
