SCHENECTADY?The Congregation Agudat Achim Religious School?will hold an open house and registration on Thursday, Sept. 1, from 6:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at the synagogue, 2117 Union St..

Teachers and school board members will be available to answer questions about the program. Registration forms, student schedules, and school year calendars will be available.

The core curriculum for the Hebrew High School was developed by Rabbi Miriam Lichtenfeld in collaboration with Jack Mintzer, the congregation?s education and program director, the school board, parents and students. The school offers text-based courses that incorporate creative activities related to Jewish History, Jewish Identity, Comparative Religions, Jewish Ethics, Judaism Today, and God.

?Eighth and ninth graders will not only study Jewish history from the time the Jews settled in Canaan through modern times, but they will also create, act out, and debate individual stories designed to convey the perspectives of different Jewish groups throughout history,? said Agudat Achim?s Rabbi Ted Lichtenfeld, who will be teaching core curriculum to eighth and ninth graders as well as confirmation classes to 10th graders.

Rabbi Miriam Lichtenfeld, who was ordained by the Jewish Theological Seminary, will teach core curriculum to 11th and 12th graders. ?I am looking forward to introducing major world religions to our students and comparing Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism to Judaism,? said the rabbi. ?Our Jewish ethics class will explore the meaning of being an ethical Jew and a ?mensch,? in this complex world, building on the Jewish commitment to tikkun olam,? she added.

The Agudat Achim Religious School offers several programs open to the public including classes starting with pre-K and finishing with grade 12.?Mintzer, at 381-8983, or aguprinc@nycapp.rr.com, can provide information.

Braiman, Friedman elected to new roles
The board of directors of Congregation Agudat Achim?s Religious School has elected Susan Braiman as the education vice president and Jessica Friedman as the chairwoman of the Religious School?s board of directors, according to the congregation?s education and program director, Jack Mintzer

Braiman joined the school board in 2004 and has been the board chairwoman since 2009. She spearheaded the development of Congregation Agudat Achim?s Hebrew High School. She holds New York Sate Education Department certifications in elementary education (K-6) and business and distributive education (7-12).

Braiman has taught business education teacher for 25 years, and holds a certificate of advanced study in educational leadership and administration from the College of St. Rose. She has been a member of the congregation since 1986.

Friedman has been on the religious school board for three years, and spearheaded the updates and revisions to the Congregation?s bar/bat mitzvah manual and was involved in the Hebrew High School planning process. She is the director of operations at Ambient Environmental in Albany. Before moving to New York from California in 2005, she was the vice president of worldwide DVD production at Warner Home Video. She has been a member of the congregation since 2005.
