Improved synchronicity: Preventive care for the power grid

Mar. 1, 2013 ? President Obama in this year's State of the Union address talked about the future of energy and mentioned "self-healing power grids" -- a grid that is able to keep itself stable during normal conditions and also to self-recover in the event of a disturbance caused, for example, by severe weather.

But as the national power-grid network becomes larger and more complex achieving reliability across the network is increasingly difficult. Now Northwestern University scientists have identified conditions and properties that power companies can consider using to keep power generators in the desired synchronized state and help make a self-healing power grid a reality.

The Northwestern team's design for a better power grid could help reduce both the frequency of blackouts and the cost of electricity as well as offer an improved plan for handling the intermittent power sources of renewable energy, such as solar and wind power, which can destabilize the network.

"We will be looking at a completely different power grid in the future," said Adilson E. Motter, who led the research. "The use of renewable energy is growing. More people will be driving electric cars, and the power grid will be delivering this energy, not gas stations. We need a power grid that is more capable and more reliable. This requires a better understanding of the current power grid as well as new ways to stabilize it."

Motter is the Harold H. and Virginia Anderson Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Northwestern's Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences.

The crux of the challenge is that for the U.S. power grid to function the power generators in each of its three interconnections (Eastern, Western and Texas) must be synchronized, all operating at the frequency of 60 hertz. Out-of-synch power generators can lead to blackouts that affect millions of people and cost billions of dollars -- losses similar to those of the Northeast blackout of 2003.

Having a network that can synchronize spontaneously and recover from failures in real time -- in other words, a self-healing power grid -- could prevent such blackouts. To help achieve this, power companies could apply the Northwestern guidelines as they add power generators to the network or tweak existing generators.

A paper describing the researchers' mathematical model, titled "Spontaneous synchrony in power-grid networks," is published in the March 2013 issue of the journal Nature Physics.

When a problem develops in the power-grid network, control devices are used to return power generators to a synchronized state. Motter likens this to using medicine to treat someone who is ill. He and his colleagues are suggesting conditions to keep synchronicity in good shape so interventions are kept to a minimum.

"Our approach is preventive care -- preventing failures instead of mitigating them," said Motter, an author of the paper and an executive committee member of the Northwestern Institute on Complex Systems (NICO). "The guidelines we offer could be very useful as the power grid expands."

The researchers derived a condition under which the desired synchronous state of a power grid is stable. They then used this condition to identify tunable parameters of the power generators that result in spontaneous synchronization. This synchronization can be autonomous, not guided by control devices.

"The blackout at this year's Super Bowl was caused by a device that was installed specifically to prevent blackouts," said Takashi Nishikawa, an author of the paper and a research associate professor of physics and astronomy at Northwestern. "A large fraction of blackouts have human and equipment errors among the causes.

"Reduced dependence on conventional control devices can improve the reliability of the grid," he said. "Our analysis also suggests ways to design control strategies that potentially can improve the existing ones."

Power generators are very different from each other; some are large and others small. Motter and his colleagues identified a "body mass index" for power generators, which they suggest should be kept approximately the same (making, in essence, all generators look the same to the network) in order to strengthen spontaneous synchronicity in the system. If the body mass indices change, they should be changed in a coordinated way.

The researchers demonstrated their model using real power grids of hundreds of power generators, similar to the size of the Texas portion of the U.S. power grid.

No. 2 Gonzaga survives scare from BYU 70-65

PROVO, Utah (AP) ? Kelly Olynyk scored 19 points, Gary Bell Jr. hit four 3-pointers and No. 2 Gonzaga survived a late Brigham Young rally for a 70-65 victory Thursday night and its 10th outright conference title.

The Bulldogs (28-2, 15-0 West Coast Conference) host Portland on Saturday and a win there could mean Gonzaga's first-ever No. 1 ranking.

Gonzaga led by 11 points with 10:51 left but BYU fought back.

Consecutive 3-pointers by Brock Zylstra, another by Craig Cusick and two free throws by Brandon Davies tied it at 60 with 4:18 remaining.

Olynyk hit a key jumper down the stretch and Kevin Pangos made two free throws to help seal it.

BYU had one final chance with 6.6 seconds remaining and down three points but Gonzaga fouled Cusick before he could attempt a 3.

Tyler Haws had 19 points for BYU (20-10, 9-6).

Davies added 12 points and 11 rebounds in his final home game for the Cougars despite being plagued by foul trouble.

The Bulldogs won the first meeting in Spokane, Wash., by 20 points.

Olynyk was nearly perfect in the first game, going 9 of 9 from the field and 8 of 8 from the free throw line for 26 points.

This time, he probably felt as if he were in a football game as it was rough-and-tumble from the start, with a former Cougars football player even called for an intentional foul on Olynyk as he drove the lane.

He finished 7 of 10 from the field.

Bell was the lone Gonzaga player to have any success shooting the 3.

Pangos was 1 of 12 from beyond the arc and the Bulldogs 6 of 30 overall from 3-point range.

But Gonzaga held BYU to 36.5 percent shooting and had a marked advantage at the free throw line. The Bulldogs made 20 of 34 attempts, compared to 13 of 22 for BYU.

BYU's hopes of a seventh straight NCAA appearance may come down to winning the WCC tourney in Las Vegas. The Cougars also could see their streak of six consecutive 25-win seasons end.

At least the Cougars know they pushed Gonzaga to the limit.

After Pangos made two free throws, he fouled Cusick on a 3-point attempt with 7 seconds left.

Should Gonzaga ascend to the top spot, the question remains whether the Bulldogs would garner a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament ? something they have never achieved.

Their only losses this season were to Butler and Illinois when both were ranked No. 13.

Provided they defeat Portland, they will have won 12 straight heading into the WCC tournament.

On Thursday, they got a test.

The game was physical from the start, with bodies flying, players diving and the pace frenetic.

BYU suffered a blow early when Davies picked up two fouls in 2 1-2 minutes and he was replaced by converted football player ? 6-foot-7 freshman Bronson Kaufusi.

The Bulldogs went to Olynyk often early. He had seven points in 5 minutes and the Bulldogs bumped their lead to 19-10 thanks to two 3-pointers by Bell.

The Cougars pulled to 23-18 on Davies' reverse dunk with 8:08 left in the half and were within 25-23 on a long jumper by Haws with 6:30 left.

Gonzaga led 35-31 at halftime but opened the second half with another 3-pointer by Bell and dunk by Olynyk, who forced Davies into his third foul less than 4 minutes in.

Davies picked up foul No. 4 with 13:33 left.

The game only got rougher, with Kaufusi called for an intentional foul as Olynyk drove to the basket with 11 minutes left.

Impact craters may have been a toasty home for early life

Heat from a cosmic crash could have nurtured ancient organisms

Meteorites smacking into the early Earth could have created warm, watery environments favorable to primordial life. A new study of an impact crater in Finland suggests that such hydrothermal activity could have lasted up to 1.6 million years ? at least 10 times longer than theory suggested, providing plenty of time for life to emerge and spread.

Ancient impact craters on Mars were probably also home to hydrothermal activity, making them good places to search for signs of life, the team reports online February 19 in Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta.

The work is ?quite exciting,? says Gordon Osinski, a planetary geologist at the University of Western Ontario in Canada. ?One of the big unknowns has been how long do these hydrothermal systems last.?

Because hydrothermal systems house life?s most ancient lineages, many biologists think that the first organisms arose there. Volcanoes drive most hydrothermal activity today, such as the hot springs and geysers of Yellowstone. But when life evolved about 3.8 billion years ago, frequent impacts pummeling the planet were the largest source of hydrothermal activity. Energy from such events melted rock and heated water circulating through the Earth?s crust. These hydrothermal environments would have been cozy, protective habitats where life could have emerged, or at least thrived and evolved, Osinski says.

Geologic activity has erased most of the planet?s craters and left the remaining ones poorly preserved, says planetary scientist David Kring of the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston. But scientists have managed to estimate that the roughly 250-kilometer-wide Sudbury Crater in Canada hosted hydrothermal activity for a million years or longer after it formed about 1.85 billion years ago.

Smaller impacts, leaving behind holes 20 to 30 kilometers wide, are 10 times as common. So these medium-sized impacts could have played a more important role than big ones in the origins of life, says study coauthor Martin Schmieder, a geologist at the University of Western Australia in Crawley. But theoretical calculations had indicated these craters would have cooled too quickly to sustain hydrothermal activity for more than a few tens of thousands of years?probably not long enough for life to have gotten its start there.?

Schmieder and coauthor Fred Jourdan of Curtin University in Perth, Australia, didn?t intend to measure the cooling time of a medium-sized crater. But that?s what happened when they dated Finland?s 23-kilometer-wide Lappaj?rvi Crater. Using rocks from the crater, the pair determined that the impact occurred about 76.2 million years ago.

But some samples were as much as 1.6 million years younger. Those samples were grains of potassium-feldspar, which is one of the last minerals to crystallize when rock melted by an impact cools. The difference in age between the older rocks and the potassium-feldspar represents the period when the crater was hot enough to support a hydrothermal environment, Schmieder and Jourdan say.

Similar studies of other craters will help determine whether long-lived hydrothermal activity is common to all medium-sized impacts or unique to Lappaj?rvi, says planetary scientist Jay Melosh of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind. Schmieder and Jourdan plan to look at well-preserved craters in Germany or Australia, where they will also investigate properties that influence how long a crater takes to cool.

?I?m happy, if not ecstatic, that people are going to these [smaller] impact craters to collect the data,? Kring says. That will help researchers improve computer simulations of hydrothermal systems in impact craters on Earth and on Mars.
