In these times when everyone is busy making a living, very few people would like to exert extra effort on cooking for a party and would rather pay for a catered menu. For a homemaker who would like to spread her wings a little and be able to create additional income for her family, a small catering business is something she can do on the side.
On the other hand, a newly graduate of a culinary course may also start his or her own catering service. No matter the experience, education and amount of capital invested, knowledge of the proper catering equipment is essential. A catering gig cannot be successful if the equipment, tools and supplies are lacking.
Commercial Kitchen Equipment
Investing in quality commerical kitchen equipment is every caterer?s responsibility. Stoves, broilers, convection ovens, steamers, grills are a must. Food preparation tools may include food processors, sharp knives, mixers, blenders and even ice cream makers. Coffee makers and espresso machines are also great additions to a catering business.
Flatware, Glassware , Cutlery and Serving Dishes
Every catering service should have flatware in assorted designs and different sizes. Flatware, cutlery and serving dishes should match the cuisine of the catering menu. The glassware should also be appropriate for the type of beverage being served.
Bar Equipment
Providing a bar service is not a requirement for every catering business, but it is a welcome addition especially for dinner party services. Bar equipment and tools include, but are not limited to, ice buckets and coolers, spirit dispensers, decanters, bottle stops and pourers. Waiters should also be equipped with anti-skid trays. Of course, having a wide and versatile collection of wines, champagne and other spirits is imperative.
Staff Uniforms
As part of professionalism, the chef and servers should always be presentable. Chef?s whites are a must, while the servers should be required to have uniform attire.
Cleaning Supplies
Cleaning supplies and materials should never be left out of the inventory. Dishwashing detergents and sponges are obvious essentials. On the other hand, if the catering service also provides table cloths, laundry detergents, stain removers and cleaning chemicals should be added to the inventory.
Quality catering equipment and supplies may amount to a huge chunk of money. However, having a complete inventory of commercial kitchen equipment and tools is a required investment for every catering business. Without them, quality of food and service will be lacking. The success of a catering business lies with a great and delicious menu, a polite and genial staff, a well-stocked pantry, and quality catering equipment.
