Bin Laden complained of Al-Qaeda 'disaster'

Osama bin Laden bemoaned "disaster after disaster" inflicted by the US onslaught on Al-Qaeda before he was killed and even mulled changing his terror group's name, a top US official said Monday.

On the eve of the anniversary of bin Laden's death, President Barack Obama's top counter-terrorism aide John Brennan argued that a US drone campaign had left Al-Qaeda seriously weakened, and unable to replace wiped-out leaders.

Brennan said in a speech in Washington that the terror group was losing "badly," was a "shadow" of its former self, and that its core leadership would soon be "no longer relevant."

He said the Al-Qaeda leader's frustration at the demise of his group, which was behind the September 11 attacks in 2001, poured out in documents seized from his compound by US Navy SEAL commandos who killed him a year ago.

"He confessed to 'disaster after disaster'" for Al-Qaeda, Brennan said, noting that some of the captured material would be published online this week by the Combating Terrorism Center at the US Military Academy at West Point.

Brennan also said that subsequent US operations to wipe out senior Al-Qaeda leaders in Pakistan had left the group reeling.

"Under intense pressure in the tribal regions of Pakistan, they have fewer places to train and groom the next generation of operatives, they're struggling to attract new recruits.

"Morale is low," Brennan said in a speech at the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars, which was briefly interrupted by a Code Pink anti-war demonstrator who was hauled out of the room by a burly policeman.

Brennan said that the documents gathered at bin Laden's lair in Abbottabad, outside Islamabad, show the late Al-Qaeda leader urged subordinates to flee for places "away from aircraft photography and bombardment."

Things got so bad for the group which plotted the September 11 attacks in 2001, the deadliest terror strike in US history, that bin Laden considered changing the group's name in a rebranding effort, he said.

Brennan's speech prompted new claims by Republicans that the Obama campaign is exploiting the anniversary of the bin Laden raid to boost the president's prospects of reelection in November.

Senior Obama aides are clearly using the president's decision to launch the high-risk raid as an implicit comparison to the character of his presumptive Republican rival Mitt Romney.

The president himself implicitly suggested in a news conference on Monday that Romney might not have ordered the high-stakes raid last year.

Brennan also claimed that the administration's tactics against Al-Qaeda had made it harder than ever for Al-Qaeda to plan and execute large-scale, potentially catastrophic attacks.

"Today, it is increasingly clear that compared to 9/11, the core Al-Qaeda leadership is a shadow of its former self," Brennan said.

"Al-Qaeda has been left with just a handful of capable leaders and operatives, and with continued pressure is on the path to its destruction.

"And for the first time since this fight began, we can look ahead and envision a world in which the Al-Qaeda core is simply no longer relevant."

Brennan's speech amounted to the administration's most comprehensive public survey about the state of the struggle against Al-Qaeda.

He spent considerable time defending strikes by unmanned US aerial drones in nations like Pakistan, crediting them with dismantling Al-Qaeda's top leadership and causing bin Laden's distress.

Brennan said the strikes were legal, ethical and proportional, and added that Obama had instructed officials to share more details about the secret war.

Despite lauding the administration's achievements in hammering top Al-Qaeda leaders and the group's capacity, Brennan also warned that global terror threats were still potent, particularly those emanating from Africa.

"As the Al-Qaeda core falters, it continues to look to its affiliates and adherents to carry on its murderous cause," Brennan said, warning that the group's merger with the Shebab group in Somalia was "worrying."

He said that Yemen-based Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) remained a threat, despite the strike that took out radical US-born cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, who directed its external operations.

Police: No foul play in drowning of former Libyan minister

Mahmud Turkia / AFP/Getty Images

This file picture taken on March 19, 2011 in Tripoli shows Libyan Oil Minister Shokri Ghanem speaking during a press conference.

By Reuters

Libya's former prime minister and oil minister Shukri Ghanem, a prominent defector from Moammar Gadhafi's government, drowned in the River Danube, Vienna police said on Monday, but a Libyan security source suggested he could have been murdered.

Ghanem's fully-clothed body was found in the Danube in Vienna on Sunday, a few hundred yards from his home. According to a preliminary autopsy there were no indications of foul play or suicide, spokesman Roman Hahslinger told reporters.

A Libyan security source said they were investigating the death and believed he could have been pushed into the Danube by former Gadhafi agents.

Former Libyan oil minister found floating in Danube

His body was found at 8:40 a.m. on Sunday by a passerby near the entertainment area known as Copa Cagrana, where a footpath winds along the riverbank. He had spent Saturday evening watching television with his daughter.

The daughter noticed at around 10 a.m. that her father was no longer at home, police said.

The former Gadhafi confidant, who was also close to Gadhafi's son Saif al-Islam, was privy to potentially damaging information on oil deals with Western governments.

Ghanem, 69, had been chairman of Libya's state-owned National Oil Corporation (NOC) before defecting last year several months after opponents of Gadhafi had risen up against the Libyan leader and begun a rebellion.

Saad Djebbar, a UK-based Algerian lawyer who knew Ghanem and advised the Libyan government during the Lockerbie affair, told Reuters Ghanem was not the sort of man to kill himself. "It's a very mysterious death," he said.

"He was worried about the future course of politics in Libya but he would not be the kind of man for suicide. He was very well introduced internationally and had lots of connections.".

"Shokri Ghanem definitely is one of the guys who knew a lot and was one of the most powerful guys in the old regime," said David Bachmann, an Austrian Chamber of Commerce official based in Tripoli who knew Ghanem well.

As NOC chairman since 2006, Ghanem helped steer Libya's oil policy and held the high-profile job of representing Libya at OPEC meetings, often visiting Vienna for meetings in that role.

After making a final break with the Gadhafi administration last year, Ghanem first appeared in Rome, saying he had defected because of the "unbearable violence" being used by government forces to try to put down the rebellion.

He had been working of late as an energy consultant in Vienna, where two daughters and their families also live.

Hahsinger said police had been unaware of any "concrete" threats against Ghanem.

Ghanem was still closely associated with Gadhafi's rule by Libya's new leaders and had ruled out returning home.

"Definitely there were people there who did not like him or who thought that he had stolen billions and now he is in safety in Vienna, having a nice life," Bachmann said, adding it was common knowledge that Ghanem was often in Vienna.

Bachmann said he would not have been surprised to read that former Libyan rebels had taken revenge on Ghanem, but said Gadhafi allies could also have held a grudge.

"The problem was he was sitting between the chairs. For the old guys (in the Gadhafi regime) he was a defector, a kind of a rat. For the rebels he was also a rat because he did not defect early enough," Bachmann said.

A woman who answered the phone at his home in a high-rise apartment block and identified herself as his daughter said: "Today we are still in a state of shock...right now I'm sorry I can't talk more."

Bachmann said Ghanem had many friends in Austria and Italy and spent time shuttling between Vienna and Rome while trying to lead a quiet life.

"He was 69 and was not a stupid guy. You figure out you have no political future and at a certain moment you say 'OK, let's finish this Libya story and try to enjoy my family and my grandkids and that's it'."

Ghanem, who studied at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in Boston in the early 1970s, stood out among his fellow graduate students for his sharp intellect and infectious humor.

While American students there worried about soaring petrol prices during the OPEC oil embargo of 1973, he eagerly explained and defended the Arab view of the emerging new world energy order.

At an alumni reunion in 2004, he impressed his former classmates with his insider's account of the economic reforms he planned to introduce with the help of Gadhafi's son Saif al-Islam, whom he had mentored at OPEC headquarters at a time when the now-captured son wanted to make a name for himself outside of Libya.

Ghanem said Saif al-Islam had persuaded his father to reform but he wasn't sure how far reforms could go. He said he only wanted to stay in office as long as he could modernize the economy. If Gadhafi didn't keep him, Ghanem said, he would happily retire to write one or two books on economics he had in mind.

Google patent app describes NFC sharing between devices, gives us Beam deja-vu

Image

Android Beam has been with us since October of last year and now we might just be getting a look into how it came to be. A patent application made public today describes "sharing application states" across messaging apps, ongoing phone call status, as well as playback position for video and audio on multiple devices via NFC and "other" wireless communication. If you think the potential uses for the tech discussed in this filing from September of 2011 sound strikingly familiar, you're not the only one. Could this really be a part of Android Beam, or does Google have something else up its sleeve?

Final Reflections ? My Expectations Were Surpassed ? BUSINESS ...

?I am looking to participate in this wonderfully innovative class in an effort to both enhance my academic and professional growth as well as develop a personal connection with the state of Israel.?

?

?

The above quote was taken from my application essay for this class, addressing what I hoped to gain from my experience. I believe the best way to reflect on and evaluate an experience is to address the initial expectations set for the experience. In this sense, my time in Business, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship in Israel has surpassed any and all of my expectations. The ability to spend the first half of the semester studying and learning about business and history in Israel coupled with the opportunity to travel to Israel and see what we had learned firsthand made for a truly unique experience. This class is like no other and I am just so lucky that I had the chance to experience this wonderfully innovative opportunity.

Outside of an academic context, the trip to Israel also provided a connection that I had long been seeking. I finally had the chance to connect with my heritage and religion. I have always sought comfort in knowing that there exists a place that wholly encompasses what it means to be Jewish, and I feel blessed that I had the opportunity to experience this place firsthand. Israel truly is a magical, innovative, and unique country and I look forward to returning in the near future.

As this year wraps up, I am finally realizing how much of an impact this trip has made on me both personally and academically. This class has expanded the depth of my knowledge and for that I am truly thankful. Although this class is coming to an end, I know that this is just the beginning of my relationship with this wonderful country.

LG To Pull Away From Windows Phone?s Loving Embrace, Refocus On Android

LG-logoSure, Windows Phone is still but a baby alongside Android and iOS, but the platform shows promise. Woz likes it. And the fact that it's backed by hardware partners like Samsung and Nokia says good things, as well. But it would seem that LG, coming off of a few quarters in the red, has decided to back away from the platform. LG reportedly told the Korea Herald that the company would be focusing on Android handsets going forward, since "the total unit of Windows Phone sold in the global market is not a meaningful figure."
